Edwards Air Force Base covers about 301,000 acres of California's Mojave Desert, mostly in Kern County, beside Rogers Dry Lake, whose flat bed extends its runways. It is home to the Air Force Test Center and its 412th Test Wing, the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, and NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center.
The site began as the Muroc Bombing and Gunnery Range in 1933, chosen by Henry "Hap" Arnold of the Army Air Corps. As Muroc Army Air Field it grew into a flight-test site, and on October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager flew the Bell X-1 faster than sound there. The base was renamed in 1949 for Captain Glen Edwards, a test pilot who died in 1948. The Test Pilot School moved there from Wright Field in 1951, and Edwards was the space shuttle's main landing site until 1991.
The base's UFO record is as old as the modern subject. The Air Force's first Project Sign report, dated April 1948 and published in PURSUE Release 04 in July 2026, opens its incident table with a cluster of July 1947 sightings at Muroc Air Field, one of them over Rogers Dry Lake. Muroc also anchors a famous presidential contact story: in April 1954 Gerald Light wrote to the researcher Meade Layne claiming that Dwight Eisenhower had inspected five "etherships" there, a tale later tied to an evening that February when the president dropped from view in Palm Springs, reportedly for a dental visit; the Eisenhower Library dismissed the story in 2004. Astronaut Gordon Cooper, then a test pilot at Edwards, said that on May 3, 1957, base cameramen filmed a saucer-like craft landing on a dry lake bed and that he sent the film to the Pentagon; it has never been made public.
Retired Air Force colonel Dan Isbell, a former test pilot instructor, described seeing a huge black triangle over Edwards in a 2026 interview series about his career. In June 2026, during a Fox 10 live broadcast from the base, a shiny red object drifted across the frame and was shared online as a UFO; the skeptical investigator Mick West called it "a great example of parallax, with a red balloon." As the Air Force's main flight-test center, where secret aircraft have flown since the 1940s, Edwards has stayed central to both sighting reports and claims about hidden technology.
Submission statement: The story goes that in 1954, President Eisenhower vanished for a night in Palm Springs.
