Mars is a cold, dry world whose ancient valleys, deltas, lake beds, and minerals preserve evidence that liquid water once shaped its surface. More than six decades of robotic exploration have turned it from a telescopic symbol into a mapped planetary environment. NASA's current Mars program organizes that work around the planet's climate and geology, the possibility of past or present habitability, and the preparation required for eventual human exploration.
Orbiters, landers, and rovers have progressively narrowed those questions. Spirit and Opportunity documented rocks formed or altered in the presence of water; Curiosity has studied the long-lived lake environment of Gale Crater; and Perseverance is examining Jezero Crater and caching samples selected for their scientific value. This record makes Mars central to serious astrobiology, but evidence that a place could once have supported microbial life is different from evidence that life existed there.
Mars also attracts anomalous interpretations of ordinary planetary imagery. Rocks, shadows, compression artifacts, and incomplete views have been presented as manufactured objects, while scientists such as Avi Loeb have occasionally commented on specific curious-looking images without treating appearance alone as a conclusion. A separate strand comes from the declassified 1984 Mars Remote Viewing session in the U.S. government's former psychic-research files. That document records what a participant said during an experiment; it is not an observation made at Mars and was not validated by a spacecraft mission.
The planet's value to anomaly research is therefore unusually clear: Mars supplies an immense, openly studied image archive in which genuinely new geology, possible biosignatures, and visual misidentifications can coexist. Its strongest story remains the accumulating planetary-science record, while extraordinary claims about ruins, artifacts, or inhabitants have not been established by the missions surveying the surface.
