Extraterrestrial life means any life that originated beyond Earth. The category could include microorganisms in ancient Martian sediments, organisms in an ocean beneath an icy moon, or a distant technological civilization. These possibilities have very different evidentiary requirements. Astrobiology investigates habitability, organic chemistry, biosignatures, and the origin and evolution of life; SETI and technosignature research look for evidence of technology. Neither field begins by assuming that reported UAP are alien craft.
Scientific interest is well grounded. Thousands of exoplanets demonstrate that planets are common, while Mars, Europa, Enceladus, and other worlds provide environments where past or present habitability can be tested. Space missions measure atmospheres, water, chemistry, and geology. Potential biosignatures require multiple lines of evidence because nonliving processes can produce some of the same molecules or patterns. As of 2026, NASA reports no confirmed life beyond Earth.
UFO discourse often uses “extraterrestrial” more narrowly for intelligent visitors. That hypothesis can be applied to UAP Sightings, alleged bodies, messages, or recovered vehicles, but an unidentified observation is not positive evidence of off-world origin. NASA's UAP study found no basis in the existing data to conclude that reported incidents are extraterrestrial. Claims of biological material would require documented provenance, contamination controls, independent laboratories, and results that exclude terrestrial organisms.
The subject remains both a legitimate scientific question and a powerful cultural idea. UAP & Religion examines how discovery or contact might be interpreted within belief systems, while popular media supplies detailed alien societies long before evidence does. Clear language helps: “possible” describes a scientific search space, “unidentified” describes a current information state, and “extraterrestrial” is a proposed origin that has not been established for any public UAP case.
