Paraná is one of Brazil's 26 states, in the far south, with Curitiba as its capital and largest city and 11,444,380 residents at the 2022 census. It stretches from the Atlantic coast, where the Port of Paranaguá handled 56 million tons of cargo in 2021, west to the Paraná River and the borders with Paraguay and Argentina, the site of the Itaipu Dam and the Iguaçu Falls. It ranks second in Brazil for soybean production.
In a letter published by Curitiba's Diário da Tarde on 5 August 1947, surveyor José Carlos Higgins said that on 23 July, while working northwest of Pitanga, he watched a circular craft about 30 meters across land nearby and three tall, large-headed figures in transparent suits signal for him to come aboard before he retreated into the woods. A São Paulo paper retold it under the headline "Marcianos descem no Paraná," and later ufology books treat it as an early contact case; no independent record supports it. Paraná also produced Ademar José Gevaerd, a chemistry teacher in Maringá who founded Revista UFO in 1988 and in 2005 led a delegation of ufologists into a meeting with Brazilian Air Force officers in Brasília, part of a campaign for the release of military UFO files.
On May 31, 2026, animal-rescue influencer Mayk Leão filmed blinking lights over a wooded ridge near his rural property in Campo Largo, turning the Paraná UFO case into national news within days. The Brazilian Air Force told g1 that its air-defense radars had identified no object, and on June 6 YouTuber Henrique Pereira showed, according to the fact-checking outlet Aos Fatos, that the lights matched those switched on at night at a nearby campsite; Leão rejected that explanation. A second recording came from the coast the same day: CNN Brasil reported that at about 1:10 a.m. on May 31, Willyan Adriano and his wife, watching the live feed of a public camera on the Balneário Ipanema boardwalk in Pontal do Paraná, recorded at least six lights over the sea that seemed to descend and rise again; the report cited no explanation or official comment.
Further clips said to show lights over Ponta Grossa circulated on social media in early June. The state's record is thin on official documentation but long on public attention: a 1947 newspaper letter, a Maringá-born editor who pressed the Air Force to open its files, and a viral 2026 video of lights that the Air Force said its radars never registered.
The video is in Portuguese but has English subtitles. I suspected jeeps from day 2 onwards, as I saw that there are several trails in the region. These vehicles use very bright lights, and I encountered several groups of jeep drivers in the area and neighboring towns.
