Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden, built on 14 islands where Lake Mälaren drains into the Baltic Sea. First mentioned in 1252, it has about one million residents in the city and 2.5 million in the metropolitan area. The government, the Riksdag and the royal palace are all here, around the old town of Gamla Stan, and the Stockholm region produces more than a third of Sweden's economic output.
The city is also Sweden's main research centre, home to Stockholm University, the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Karolinska Institute. Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics founded in Copenhagen in 1957 by Niels Bohr and Torsten Gustafson, moved to Stockholm's AlbaNova University Centre in 2007; astronomer Beatriz Villarroel works there on archival searches for vanishing and transient sources. Stockholm also figured in the 1946 ghost rocket wave. That August, American aviation general Jimmy Doolittle and RCA president David Sarnoff arrived in the city, and The New York Times reported that the chief of the Swedish Defence Staff wanted their advice on the reports.
In 2026 the city became a gathering point for the UAP debate. On 1 October, the new Beyond Institute, organized by Villarroel, explorer Dennis Åsberg and investor Ted Persson, held its first UAP conference at Hilton Stockholm Slussen, with about 270 seats and speakers including Jesse Michels, Dylan Borland, Jonathan Caplan KC and Jordan Flowers of the Disclosure Foundation. Jake Barber, speaking remotely, claimed according to attendees' posts that egg-shaped craft are released by a cylindrical mothership in low orbit. On the evening of 3 October, Åsberg said he, his wife and a friend watched an intensely bright orb above his home in the Stockholm archipelago before it shot straight up, and a visiting UAP commentator reported a red orb crossing the sky near Gamla Stan.
Neither witness photographed the object, and Åsberg wrote that he could not explain what he saw and did not claim to know what it was. The accounts circulated alongside coverage of the conference, which Åsberg said Swedish news organizations had ignored. Stockholm's place in the UAP record combines the research institutions behind Villarroel's work with an active community of Scandinavian advocates, making the capital, as part of Sweden, the centre of the country's renewed public discussion of the subject.
