Vandenberg Space Force Base is the United States' principal West Coast launch and missile-test range. Established on the former Camp Cooke, it became an Air Force installation in 1957 and was renamed for General Hoyt Vandenberg the following year. Its coastal geography supports polar-orbit launches and long-range missile tests without sending vehicles over major population centers; the base was renamed for the Space Force in 2021.
That official mission is essential to its UAP history. Vandenberg's ranges, tracking cameras, classified payloads, and strategic-missile work created circumstances in which unusual observations could intersect with highly sensitive instrumentation. The best-known example is the 1964 Vandenberg UFO Incident, commonly called the Big Sur case, which concerned film made during an Atlas missile test launched from Vandenberg.
Former Air Force officer Bob Jacobs said years later that telescopic film showed an object approaching a test vehicle and directing beams toward it before the warhead tumbled. His former commanding officer, Florenze Mansmann, supported key parts of that account. Other analysts and the Pentagon's historical review have disputed the interpretation, pointing to the test program's decoy and reentry phenomena and the absence of publicly available film that can be independently examined.
Vandenberg is consequently both a real, heavily instrumented aerospace site and the setting of a contested historical claim. The base's documented launch record explains why specialized cameras were operating and why resulting material could be classified; it does not by itself resolve what Jacobs recalls seeing. The case remains tied to witness testimony and missing imagery, while Vandenberg continues its verifiable work in military testing, satellite launch, and space-range operations.
