Enigma Labs is a privately held technology company that runs Enigma, a smartphone app and website for reporting and mapping sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena. Scientific American described it in 2024 as a New York City start-up that lets users submit geolocated reports and recordings. The company calls itself non-partisan and "neutral on the origins of the phenomenon," and says its purpose is to advance progress on UAP through technology and what it calls social intelligence.
Enigma first drew national attention in July 2022, when Bloomberg and Fortune reported on a private beta of its app. Fortune quoted the founder, Alex Smith, as telling Bloomberg that "there was really no destination for credible information, data and sharing of expertise and insights," and the company said it had analyzed more than 400,000 citizen and military reports. In early 2023 it opened an invite-only app, courted pilots and let users file under a pseudonym. Vice reported that the app asked witnesses standardized questions, screened uploaded media for manipulation and scored each report, and noted Politico's report of a Pentagon partnership; Enigma would not name its partners. Its staff have included chief operating officer Mark Douglas and the UFO journalist Alejandro Rojas, first as head of content and research and later as a consultant.
The platform's profile rose with the late-2024 wave of reported drones over New Jersey and New York. In December 2024 the company told Scientific American that 16 percent of its U.S. submissions over the previous three weeks concerned the drone reports, and its head of marketing, Christine Kim, called the episode a "stress test" of getting users to film and report what they saw. By April 2026 Enigma said it had received more than 50,000 user reports, each reviewed by a human moderator and rated on a proprietary 1-to-100 anomalousness scale. That month it opened a web version of the app.
After the Department of War began releasing UFO files under the PURSUE initiative in May 2026, the company built a companion site cataloguing the released cases and videos and began adding the material to its maps. Rojas told DefenseScoop that "although there is a lot of information here, there is little context," and said the company could cross-reference the official cases against its database of more than 200,000 public sightings. In mid-May the New York Post, citing Marine Technology News, reported that Enigma had logged more than 9,000 sightings within 10 miles of U.S. shorelines or other large bodies of water since August 2025, and Rojas discussed the reports on NewsNation's Jesse Weber Live. A timeline by the journalist Christopher Sharp cited three Enigma reports from El Paso in the days before the FAA closed the city's airspace in February 2026.
Enigma Labs presents its archive as the largest queryable database of historical UFO sightings, and its maps and counts now appear regularly in news coverage and online UAP discussion. Its figures record what users report and how the company's moderators and scoring sort those reports, and in 2026 that civilian record became a point of comparison for the government's own releases.
