The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Chartered in 1861, it held its first classes in Boston in 1865 and moved across the Charles River to Cambridge in 1916. With about 11,800 students, most of them graduate students, it is one of the world's leading centers for engineering, physics, and computing, and its laboratories have long worked hand in hand with the U.S. military and intelligence community.
That relationship took shape in the Second World War, when MIT's Radiation Laboratory grew to about 4,000 staff developing radar. In 1951 the institute founded Lincoln Laboratory to build a continental air-defense radar network for the Air Force, and it remains a federally funded research and development center. MIT later opened the Media Lab in 1985, and its faculty and alumni have shaped fields from aerospace to cognitive science.
MIT's most direct link to UFO history is a tape. Lincoln Laboratory held a 1952 reel labeled "flying saucer talk," a recording of Air Force investigator Edward Ruppelt's March 1952 briefing on the service's UFO work. After Rep. Eric Burlison asked the laboratory to preserve it in May 2026, it was released through the Department of War that September as the 1952 Flying Saucer Talk. Four decades later the campus hosted the June 1992 Abduction Study Conference, organized by Harvard psychiatrist John Mack and MIT physicist David Pritchard, which brought about 150 researchers together to examine reports of alien abduction.
MIT also figures in disputed claims. Bob Lazar, who says he worked on alien craft at a site called S-4, has said he studied at MIT, but the institute has no record of him; in a 2026 interview he said he had been "sent there" for work kept off the books, and a group of MIT alumni from the 1980s offered to meet him privately to test the account. Alumni appear on the other side of the debate as well, including cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman, who earned his doctorate there in 1983 and now writes about consciousness and non-human contact, and physicist S. James Gates. The December 2025 killing of MIT fusion scientist Nuno Loureiro, which investigators tied to a suspect in an unrelated shooting, was drawn into online speculation about scientists' deaths without evidence of any connection to UAP.
MIT's significance in the UAP record is as an institution at the junction of Cold War defense science and modern disclosure claims. Its laboratories built the radar systems that first tracked unknowns, its archives yielded one of the earliest Air Force UFO recordings, and its name is invoked by both credentialed researchers and disputed witnesses.
