Real Time with Bill Maher is a weekly late-night political talk show on HBO, created, written and hosted by comedian Bill Maher since its premiere on February 21, 2003. Built on topical comedy and argument among politicians, journalists and authors, it is one of the longest-running political programs on American television. Between late 2025 and spring 2026 it also became a mainstream stage for the UFO disclosure debate, most prominently in Maher's closing editorial of March 27, 2026, "The Disclosure Moment."

Each episode opens with a monologue and a one-on-one interview, moves to a panel of two or three guests and a mid-show guest, and closes with "New Rules," Maher's satirical editorial. A post-show segment, "Overtime," takes viewer questions and streams on YouTube, and CNN re-airs the program on Saturdays. Scott Carter is executive producer, and the show tapes at Television City in Los Angeles, pre-recorded rather than live since its twentieth season. It was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series every year from 2005 through 2014, and in January 2026 HBO renewed it through a 26th season running into 2028.

UFOs became a booked topic in late 2025. On a Halloween episode taped October 31, 2025, Maher's first guest was Dan Farah, director of the documentary The Age of Disclosure, and Maher told him, "Whatever it is, they're flying saucers." On March 20, 2026, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna sat on a panel with Tristan Harris and Paul Begala. In that night's Overtime segment Maher asked whether full disclosure was coming, and Luna said members of Congress had received a briefing from an agency task force whose material would be declassified, including incidents they could not explain.

A week later Maher gave his New Rule to the subject, although the episode's guests, Sen. Elissa Slotkin, CNN anchor Laura Coates and commentator Stephen A. Smith, had not been booked to discuss it. He argued that the accounts came not from fringe believers but from "guys with buzz cuts and security clearances," and rejected the explanation that the objects were drones or foreign aircraft: "That's not a drone. That's not something from another country." HBO's official clip framed his conclusion as a challenge to skeptics, suggesting that anyone who still doubted aliens were observing Earth might be the real conspiracy theorist. Fox News covered the segment the next morning, and UFO advocates, including Matt Ford of the Good Trouble Show, circulated it widely.

Real Time does not investigate or report on UAP; its contribution is commentary and interviews delivered on a premium network, re-aired on CNN and clipped for YouTube. The March 2026 segments gave the disclosure argument one of its largest general-entertainment audiences of the year, voiced by a host long known for skepticism toward religious belief and paired with a sitting member of Congress describing classified briefings.
