The Air Force Office of Special Investigations is the federal investigative and counterintelligence agency serving the Department of the Air Force. Its agents operate at installations and deployed locations worldwide.
AFOSI records differ from scientific or operational case files. An agent may investigate security, deception, unauthorized disclosure, or foreign activity connected to an incident without determining its physical nature. Reports can contain witness statements, leads, and liaison material whose source status must be preserved. AFOSI has operated since 1948 and maintains field offices and specialized units around the world. Its agents investigate offenses involving Air Force and Space Force personnel or resources, conduct counterintelligence, and provide threat information to commanders. It is separate from installation security forces and from technical laboratories that analyze sensors or materials. Case files can include interviews, forensic work, liaison reporting, and command notifications, with release constrained by privacy, law-enforcement, and security rules.
The organization appears in historical UFO cases and allegations of intimidation, disinformation, or witness contact. Its relationship to the USAF and base security makes involvement plausible where an event affects protected assets. That does not validate every “men in black” narrative or show that AFOSI possessed recovered technology.
AFOSI’s role in UAP investigations is bounded by law-enforcement and counterintelligence authority. A credible account identifies the case number, office, purpose, and disposition. Contact by an agent proves an investigation occurred, not the extraordinary explanation a witness may attach to it.
