UAP research is the systematic study of unidentified anomalous phenomena, reports of objects or lights in the air, at sea, or in space that remain unexplained after initial review. It works through witness interviews, radar and sensor records, imagery analysis, physical-trace testing, and statistical study of large report sets. The field has always had two drivers: governments investigating flight safety and national security, and scientists and civilian groups asking whether some reports point to phenomena science does not yet understand.
The United States Air Force dominated the first decades. Project Sign began in 1948, followed by Grudge and Project Blue Book, which logged 12,618 reports before closing in 1969, 701 of them listed as unidentified. Its closure followed the University of Colorado study run by the Condon Committee, which concluded that further study was unlikely to advance science. Civilian organizations such as NICAP, APRO, MUFON, and J. Allen Hynek's Center for UFO Studies kept collecting cases, while France created GEPAN in 1977, a state program that continues today as GEIPAN. Between 2008 and 2010 the Defense Intelligence Agency's AAWSAP contract funded case investigations and 38 technical reference studies.
Official research was rebuilt after 2021. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence's preliminary assessment reviewed 144 military reports and could explain only one, and Congress then required a standing office, which became the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office. NASA's independent study team reported in 2023 that poor, uncalibrated data were the main obstacle and that stigma discouraged reporting, and AARO's 2024 historical review found no verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial technology. Academic and nonprofit efforts grew alongside, including Harvard's Galileo Project and its ground observatories and astronomer Beatriz Villarroel's peer-reviewed but contested studies of transient flashes on pre-Sputnik sky-survey plates. Some former officials and researchers, including physicist Eric Davis, contend that the most consequential UAP data remain inside classified programs.
The field's defining shift is from anecdote toward instrumented, repeatable observation. In February 2026, AARO published recommendations from a private 2025 workshop with universities and civilian researchers on standard formats for recording and sharing witness accounts. That June, the UAP Science Advisory Council chaired by Avi Loeb was formed to advise the government's new UAP Governance Board, and by August it said it was designing a joint field experiment with the government to collect new observational data. Whether purpose-built sensors and open data can resolve cases that decades of witness reports could not is now the central question in UAP research.

In the same prefecture as Fukushima, there’s an entire town built around UFOs. Iinomachi sits at the foot of Mount Senganmori, a 462m peak where residents have reported glowing objects for roughly 40 years. Some locals even believe the mountain is an ancient pyramid. Its UFO museum opened in 1992 and holds about 3,000 books, photos and artifacts. In 2021 the town opened a UFO research lab that collects sighting reports from around the world.
