Aldo Rebelo is a Brazilian politician who served as president of the Chamber of Deputies and held four ministerial posts, including Minister of Defense in 2015 and 2016. In 2026 he became an unexpected figure in the UFO disclosure debate after saying Brazil's armed forces hold files on the country's best-known cases, remarks that American advocates presented as official confirmation of the 1996 Varginha incident.
Born in Viçosa, Alagoas, in 1956, Rebelo spent three decades in the Communist Party of Brazil and represented São Paulo in the federal Chamber of Deputies from 1991 to 2015. Under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva he coordinated the government's relations with Congress, and he presided over the Chamber from 2005 to 2007, briefly serving as acting president of Brazil in 2006. Under President Dilma Rousseff he served as Minister of Sport, of Science, Technology and Innovation, and finally of Defense, from October 2015 to May 2016. He later moved through several parties; in early 2026 the Christian Democracy party named him a presidential pre-candidate, then replaced him in May, and by August he had joined the Social Democratic Party to help coordinate another candidate's campaign.
Rebelo first said in early 2026 that he knew what Brazil's military UFO documents contained and could release them if the United States released its own. In a long interview with Jesse Michels of American Alchemy, published in June, he said he knew what the armed forces kept in their files, that part of the relevant report remained classified and he had not been able to analyze it, and that the 1977 Operação Prato investigation of lights over Colares was an official military operation. Michels wrote that Rebelo had told him the Varginha and Colares events happened, and filmmaker James Fox and Rep. Eric Burlison cited him at a June press conference at the U.S. Capitol.
Rebelo soon narrowed his claims. Days later he told the Brazilian press that he had revealed no state secrets and had only commented on information already public. Researcher Joe Murgia noted that he had offered no proof, Brazilian ufology outlet Portal Vigília called his wording vague, and Brazil's Defense Ministry and armed forces did not comment. In October 2026 he urged the United States to release its own Varginha files, saying Brazil would then naturally offer its classified documents.
Rebelo's significance is as the most senior former Brazilian official to speak publicly about the country's UFO archives. His statements tied Brazil's disclosure to Washington's and gave new life to the Varginha and Colares cases, while resting on his recollection of files rather than on any document released.

I finished this episode of American Alchemy last night.
