André Carson is an American politician who has represented Indiana’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House since 2008. Before entering Congress, he worked in law enforcement and homeland-security roles in Indiana. He later joined the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, where his assignments gave him a direct role in oversight of intelligence agencies and national-security programs.
Carson’s political career developed through Indianapolis public service and a special election following the death of his grandmother, Representative Julia Carson. He became one of the first Muslim members of Congress and built seniority across intelligence, transportation, and homeland-security work. That background matters to his UAP role because he approached the subject as a sitting overseer accustomed to classified programs, agency jurisdiction, and the practical consequences of weak reporting systems.
As chair of the intelligence committee’s Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence, and Counterproliferation Subcommittee, Carson opened the May 2022 hearing on unidentified aerial phenomena. It was the first open congressional hearing devoted to the subject in more than half a century. Carson framed the issue around flight safety, intelligence collection, adversary technology, and the stigma that had discouraged service members from reporting observations.
Carson helped move UAP oversight from occasional classified briefings into a public legislative record. He supported standardized reporting, improved collection, and clearer accountability for the offices assigned to military incidents. By chairing the 2022 congressional hearing, he compelled defense and intelligence officials to describe what they were collecting, what remained unresolved, and how lawmakers would be informed. The hearing also gave future lawmakers a public precedent for questioning the government’s investigative offices.
