Jared Moskowitz is U.S. Representative for Florida’s 23rd Congressional District, a Democrat who assumed office on January 3, 2023. His district spans portions of Broward and southern Palm Beach Counties—including Boca Raton, Coral Springs, most of Deerfield Beach, and parts of Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach—and is politically competitive, with a lean toward Democratic preferences (PVI D+2). Moskowitz succeeded Ted Deutch and was narrowly reelected in 2024, affirming his hold on a swing seat in South Florida.
His political importance lies in his combination of crisis management credentials, bipartisan legislative work, and active engagement on culture-war issues, especially when it intersects with community safety and identity.
Born December 18, 1980 in Coral Springs, Moskowitz earned a BA in political science from George Washington University and a JD from Nova Southeastern University. He began elective office early—serving on the Parkland City Commission while in law school—then won a seat in the Florida House of Representatives in 2012, where among his notable achievements was his leadership, after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre, in drafting and passing the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act addressing gun age limits, red flag laws, and school safety reforms.
In 2019 he was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis to lead Florida’s Division of Emergency Management where he managed hurricane response, oversaw the state’s COVID-19 response including vaccine distribution and PPE logistics. After stepping down in 2021, he served briefly on the Broward County Commission before winning his congressional seat.
In Congress, Moskowitz serves on both the Foreign Affairs and Judiciary Committees, holding ranking or oversight roles that match his background in security, emergency response, and public safety. He has also taken public positions on antisemitism—drawing on family history—and has condemned it within his own party. Additionally, a “potential plot” against his life was uncovered near his home, tied to antisemitic language, which has raised questions about the security risks to elected officials and racial or religious hostility.
What to watch: how Moskowitz balances his crisis-tested executive experience with the demands of legislative work, particularly in a district that can swing.
