Batya Ungar-Sargon is an American journalist, author and television host who presents Batya!, a weekly political talk show on NewsNation, and the companion livestream Prove It! with Batya. A former opinion editor at The Forward and Newsweek, she is known for arguments about class, the news media and the shift of working-class voters between the parties. Her connection to unidentified anomalous phenomena is slight: it rests on her role at a network that has made UAP a regular beat and on a single 2026 episode in which she examined UFO claims with a well-known skeptic.
Ungar-Sargon has said she was born in Philadelphia in 1981, and she attended high school in Israel. She earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Chicago in 2004 and a doctorate in English from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2013, with a dissertation on the early English novel. After working as a journalist and as managing editor of the drinks site VinePair, she became opinion editor of The Forward in 2017, a tenure in which critics on the left accused her of a right-leaning, Zionist editorial line. She later became deputy opinion editor of Newsweek, where she co-hosted the podcast The Debate.
Her books Bad News: How Woke Media Is Undermining Democracy (2021) and Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women (2024), both from Encounter Books, argue that elite institutions, including the national press, have turned away from working-class Americans. A third book, The Jews and the Left, followed from Broadside Books in 2026. Bari Weiss once described her as a "left-wing populist," a label she later adopted; she has described a shift in her political views, urged American Jews to vote for Donald Trump in November 2024, and introduced herself as a "MAGA leftist" on Real Time with Bill Maher in March 2025.
NewsNation announced in August 2025 that she would host Batya!, a one-hour Saturday program reviewing the week's news with her commentary and a panel of guests. It premiered on September 20, 2025, with Megyn Kelly as a guest. In 2026 the network added Prove It! with Batya, a live-streamed debate in which guests from across the political spectrum argue a proposition and viewers vote on who made the stronger case. Her autumn 2026 programs dealt mainly with the war with Iran, the midterm elections, an alleged sexual assault case at a Cornell University fraternity and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and she appeared on Elizabeth Vargas Reports and filled in as host of On Balance. In a June 2026 episode of Batya! about conspiracy theories, she spoke with Michael Shermer, the founder of Skeptic magazine, about claims concerning UFOs and other modern theories.
Ungar-Sargon's significance lies chiefly in political and media commentary, where Bad News and Second Class made her a prominent advocate of working-class populism and a sharp critic of the national press. Her place in the UAP record is peripheral. Her NewsNation programs deal mostly with elections, foreign policy, cultural disputes and criminal cases, and her one documented engagement with the subject treated UFOs alongside other conspiracy theories, in conversation with a skeptic, rather than as a question of disclosure or government secrecy.
