Lazar has said from day one that his supervisor was named Dennis Mariani. Mike Thigpen was a federal investigator who did background checks on people up for sensitive jobs out in the Nevada desert. He worked for OFI, the Office of Federal Investigations, a real (but obscure) fed agency.

Records show Dennis John Mariani (1940–2007), a USMC corporal buried at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
