Larry King, born Lawrence Harvey Zeiger on November 19, 1933, in New York City and raised in Brooklyn, was an American radio and television interviewer best known as the host of CNN's Larry King Live. Over a career of more than six decades he conducted tens of thousands of interviews with politicians, entertainers and newsmakers. He passed away in 2021. His place in UFO history comes from his programmes rather than any research of his own: for nearly two decades he regularly gave witnesses, researchers, skeptics and former officials a national audience.
King began in Miami radio, making his first broadcast on WAHR in Miami Beach in May 1957 and later hosting on WIOD. In January 1978 he launched The Larry King Show, an overnight national call-in programme on the Mutual Broadcasting System that ran until May 1994. Larry King Live began on CNN in June 1985 and ended in December 2010. He won Peabody Awards for radio in 1982 and television in 1992 and entered the Radio Hall of Fame in 1989. After leaving CNN he co-founded Ora TV in 2012 and hosted Larry King Now and Politicking with Larry King until 2020.
In 1994 King took his talk show to the desert outside Area 51 for a two-hour live special, produced by CNN and broadcast on TNT, that combined live panels with prerecorded segments on the evidence for UFOs and alleged government secrecy. Its guests included Stanton Friedman, Steven Greer and Jacques Vallée. The same year former senator Barry Goldwater told King on Larry King Live that he believed the government knew more about UFOs than it said, and recalled that General Curtis LeMay "got madder than hell" when Goldwater asked to see a room at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base where he believed secret material was kept.
King returned to the subject often. On July 13, 2007, a Larry King Live hour titled "Are UFOs Real?" brought together Stanton Friedman, Jesse Marcel Jr., the Skeptic publisher Michael Shermer, the filmmaker James Fox, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin and former Arizona governor Fife Symington, who described an "enormous" craft he said he saw over Phoenix in 1997. Fox has said that King later passed a copy of his 2009 documentary I Know What I Saw to Steven Spielberg and forwarded him the reply, in which Spielberg called the film "compelling." Fox reposted the letter in June 2026.
Clips from King's programmes circulated widely again in 2026. Posts shared an interview in which Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell told King that insiders and Pentagon sources had assured him the Roswell crash was real, a claim that rests on Mitchell's secondhand sources, and another presented as King's conversation with Bob Lazar. Full recordings of the 1994 Area 51 special were reposted to UFO forums in June and October. Taken together, King's broadcasts form one of the longest-running mainstream television records of UFO witnesses, believers and skeptics arguing their cases before a general audience.

It's a fascinating document to see how the extraterrestrial mystery and Area 51 were discussed on television in the 1990s, long before the recent official declassifications.
