Steve Scalise is an American Republican politician who has represented Louisiana's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House since 2008 and has served as House Majority Leader since January 2023. As the chamber's second-ranking Republican, he manages the floor schedule and the majority's legislative agenda. His link to unidentified anomalous phenomena is narrow: in April 2026 he confirmed that he had attended a classified UAP briefing and said some of what he saw was "eye-opening," while declining to describe any of it.

Born in New Orleans in 1965, Scalise studied computer science at Louisiana State University. He served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1996 to 2008 and briefly in the state Senate before winning a special election to Congress in May 2008. He rose through the Republican leadership as majority whip from 2014 and minority whip from 2019. In June 2017 he was shot and seriously wounded when a gunman opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, and he returned to the House that September. After Kevin McCarthy was removed as Speaker in October 2023, House Republicans nominated Scalise for the post, but he withdrew days later when he could not secure enough votes.

Scalise's name entered the UAP debate through Representative Eric Burlison of Missouri, a House Oversight member who has pressed for classified briefings on the subject. In April 2026 Burlison spoke publicly about a classified briefing he had received and said Scalise had also attended a classified UAP briefing. UAP commentators who shared a clip of Burlison described the session as concerning an "undeniable" recent effort to summon UAP; in it, Burlison said "so many people" had witnessed the events, "all credible people working in our top intelligence sector." Neither Scalise nor any agency has confirmed that account of the briefing's content.

Matt Laslo of Ask a Pol UAP put Burlison's account to Scalise in the Capitol on April 28, 2026. "We had a classified briefing that some of us went to," Scalise said, adding that "you can't talk about what was discussed at the briefing." Asked whether it was eye-opening, he said "there's some things you see that are eye-opening" and that this was as far as he would go. He said "no" when asked whether it was unsettling, and he declined to say whether the material pointed to foreign adversaries or something extraterrestrial. Days later, journalist Ross Coulthart said he was aware of briefings to several members, "including, I think," Scalise, and claimed they had been told the intelligence community had verified that human psychic abilities could invoke the phenomenon. Scalise has not addressed that claim.

Scalise's public UAP record consists of that brief exchange, and its weight comes from his office rather than from anything he disclosed. His confirmation showed that the classified UAP briefings of 2026 reached the House's top Republican floor leader as well as members of the Congressional UAP Caucus who had long sought them, and it made him one of the most senior lawmakers on record as having been briefed on the subject.
