Yasukazu Hamada is a Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party who has represented Chiba Prefecture in the House of Representatives since 1993 and has twice served as minister of defense. Since 2024 he has chaired the Japanese Parliamentary UAP Caucus, a cross-party league of Diet members that treats unidentified anomalous phenomena as a question of air defense and crisis management.
Hamada was born on October 21, 1955, in Futtsu, Chiba, the son of Koichi Hamada, also a member of the lower house. He studied at Hillsdale College in Michigan and graduated from Senshu University in business administration. He worked as a secretary to Michio Watanabe, including during Watanabe's tenure as finance minister, and from 1984 to his father. In 1993 he won his father's old seat, and he has held the Chiba 12th district for most of the years since, winning a 12th term in February 2026.
He first became defense minister in September 2008 under Prime Minister Taro Aso and soon removed the Air Self-Defense Force chief of staff, Toshio Tamogami, over an essay disputing the government's view of Japan's wartime record. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida appointed him again in August 2022. In February 2023, after the United States shot down a Chinese balloon, his ministry said balloon-shaped objects seen over Japan between 2019 and 2021 were "strongly presumed" to be Chinese reconnaissance balloons, and Hamada said Japan could take necessary measures against foreign balloons entering its airspace. In the Diet he has chaired the budget committee and the rules committee and twice led the party's Diet affairs committee.
When the UAP caucus launched in June 2024 with more than 80 members, Hamada said it was "extremely irresponsible of us to be resigned to the fact that something is unknowable," AFP reported. In May 2025 he led a delegation that gave Defense Minister Gen Nakatani a proposal for a dedicated unit, modeled on the Pentagon's AARO, to collect and scientifically analyze UAP information; Nakatani called it a very important issue. On May 28, 2026, Hamada handed Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara a call for a Cabinet Secretariat command center, citing three lights seen over the Genkai nuclear plant in July 2025.
In September 2026 Hamada joined U.S. Rep. Eric Burlison and former lawmaker Yoshiharu Asakawa in an op-ed arguing that allied legislatures should cooperate on UAP oversight, writing that Japanese legislators had learned of two unresolved Indo-Pacific incidents only through a U.S. file release. A former defense minister leading that push has given the caucus standing with Japan's defense and cabinet officials and tied Tokyo's handling of the subject to American disclosure.
