Astral projection is an esoteric practice in which a person attempts to experience consciousness leaving the body and traveling through physical or nonphysical space. Traditions describe an “astral body” or subtle form that can move independently during sleep, trance, meditation, or deliberate visualization. The practice overlaps with lucid dreaming and spontaneous out-of-body experiences but adds a metaphysical interpretation of separation and travel.
Accounts of soul journeys appear in many religious and occult systems, while the modern Western vocabulary developed through Theosophy and later New Age writing. Robert Monroe popularized a practical, nonsectarian approach in the twentieth century and built training methods around altered states. Intelligence interest in Remote Viewing is often blended with astral projection, although remote viewing was designed as a target-description protocol rather than a claim of bodily exit.
Neuroscience treats out-of-body experience as a disturbance in the integration of visual, vestibular, tactile, and body-position information. Stimulation, lesions, epilepsy, migraine, sleep transitions, and extreme stress can produce a viewpoint that feels displaced from the body. Research particularly implicates the temporoparietal junction and related multisensory networks. These findings explain how the experience can be vivid without settling every spiritual interpretation a practitioner assigns to it.
Within Consciousness & Psi, the disputed issue is veridical perception: whether a projector can report hidden or distant information unavailable to ordinary senses. Controlled results have not established reliable travel by a separable consciousness. Astral projection remains significant as a repeatable subjective practice and a cultural framework for unusual self-location, not as confirmed transport through an astral plane.

If you watch the docs and read up you'll find that many experiencers have out of body experiences following contact with aliens. This suggests that the ETs are using the astral to get here and to do some of the stuff they do like levitate ppl and various mind control stuff.
