Missing time is the abduction-research term for an unexplained gap in memory around a UFO encounter, rooted in the 1961 Hill case and popularized by Budd Hopkins's 1981 book.
Missing time is the term UFO researchers use for a period a witness cannot account for during or after a reported encounter, typically noticed when a clock, or the length of a journey, does not match what the person remembers. In abduction research the gap itself became a warning sign: investigators treated lost hours as a possible indication that an abduction had occurred and that memories of it had been suppressed. The phrase has since spread from abduction and contact literature into the everyday vocabulary of experiencers.
The template comes from the Betty and Barney Hill abduction of September 1961. Driving home through New Hampshire, the Hills arrived hours later than the trip should have taken and said they recalled almost nothing of a stretch of U.S. Route 3; in hypnosis sessions with psychiatrist Benjamin Simon beginning in 1964, they described being taken aboard a craft. Artist Budd Hopkins made the idea central to the field with Missing Time (1981) and Intruders (1987), arguing that unexplained lost time or unease about a place could point to an abduction and using regressive hypnosis to explore those gaps.
Memory research offers ordinary routes to similar experiences. Drivers in the state known as highway hypnosis can cover long distances and later have partial or complete amnesia for the time spent driving, a relevant context because many missing-time accounts, including the Hills', unfold on long night drives. Hypnosis increases the number of things a person recalls, both accurate and false, and a 2002 Harvard study led by psychologist Susan Clancy found that people reporting recovered memories of alien abduction were more prone than control participants to false recall and recognition. Hopkins countered that the Hills' accounts persisted despite their hypnotist's skepticism, so hypnotist bias alone could not explain them.
The motif remains central to current testimony. In September 2026, American Alchemy reunited former Air Force security policemen Mario Woods and Michael Johnson to revisit the lights and missing hours they associate with a night in 1977 at an Ellsworth missile site, the basis of the 1977 Ellsworth AFB incident. In a Breakfast Club interview reported that month, funk musician George Clinton said he and Bootsy Collins lost time after a beam of light struck their car near Toronto. Missing time endures as the hinge of the modern abduction narrative: it turns a sighting into a possible abduction, and it marks the point where witness testimony, hypnosis and memory science meet most directly.
