The “Nazca mummies” are a group of bodies, fragments, and three-fingered specimens promoted as ancient non-human remains from southern Peru. Journalist and television presenter Jaime Maussan brought examples to international attention, including presentations to Mexico's Congress in 2023. Supporters cite imaging, carbon dates, anatomy, and laboratory statements as evidence that some specimens are genuine organisms unlike known humans.
The collection has a major provenance problem. The bodies did not emerge through a documented archaeological excavation with controlled custody, and different specimens have circulated under the same broad label. That makes it unsafe to transfer a finding about one object to all the others. Date tests can determine the age of sampled organic material without proving that the complete construction is ancient, intact, or a single organism. CT images require interpretation by qualified specialists with access to original scan data.
Peruvian forensic specialists reported in January 2024 that two seized humanoid figures and a tridactyl hand were fabricated using animal and human-like materials, adhesives, and modern construction. Officials emphasized cultural-property concerns. Promoters replied that those seized objects were not the principal specimens they champion. Both statements can be true, which is why exact specimen identifiers and custody are essential; debunking a replica does not automatically resolve every body, and claims about another body do not rehabilitate the replica.
No specimen in the public record has established Extraterrestrials or a new non-human intelligent species. A decisive study would require lawful provenance, independent multidisciplinary access, contamination controls, reproducible imaging, anatomy, histology, and genomics published with raw data. Until then, “Nazca mummies” names a disputed collection and media controversy rather than a validated biological discovery.
