Probed Analysis

Project Sign, also called Project Saucer, was the first formal US Air Force study of unidentified flying objects. Created at the end of 1947 and run through 1948 by the Technical Intelligence Division of the Air Materiel Command at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, it was charged with collecting and evaluating reports of flying discs on the premise that they might bear on national security. It is remembered for a disputed internal estimate that the objects were interplanetary and for its abrupt replacement by a more dismissive successor.

The project grew out of the summer 1947 wave of disc reports. On September 23, 1947, Lieutenant General Nathan Twining, the command's head, judged the reported phenomenon "something real" and recommended a classified, code-named study. A December 30, 1947 letter from Major General L. C. Craigie to the command created that study as Project Sign with a 2-A priority, one step below the highest, according to Edward Ruppelt, who later headed Project Blue Book. The Ohio State astronomer J. Allen Hynek joined as a scientific consultant in 1948.

According to Ruppelt's 1956 book, after an Eastern Air Lines DC-3 crew reported a cigar-shaped object in July 1948, Sign's staff wrote a top-secret Estimate of the Situation concluding that the objects were interplanetary. He wrote that Air Force Chief of Staff General Hoyt Vandenberg rejected it for lack of proof and that it was later destroyed, with a few copies kept. No copy has surfaced, and the Condon committee wrote in 1969 that it could not verify the report's existence. Sign's own final report, prepared in February 1949 and classified secret, recommended carrying on only at the minimum level needed to record and summarize reports, and ending its special status once solved cases showed that the sightings posed no threat to national security.

On February 11, 1949, the project was officially renamed Project Grudge. Ruppelt wrote that the order said the name "Sign" had been compromised, and that Grudge worked on the premise that UFOs could not exist. An April 1949 public summary from the command's intelligence division said some objects appeared to be real aircraft but that the data were too thin to determine their origin. Grudge's final report attributed the reports to misidentification, mild mass hysteria, hoaxes and psychopathology, and the work was later revived as Project Blue Book, which ran until 1969.

Sign's records returned to circulation in 2026 through the Department of War's PURSUE releases. A 1948 Project Sign progress report, released on July 10, tabulated the shapes, sounds, speeds and formations reported in 100 sightings from 1947 and 1948, alongside a documented hoax and known engineering studies of circular aircraft. A September post drew attention to a 1948 Sign report's account of July 1947 sightings by military personnel at Muroc Air Field, and an August 7 release added a 245-page compilation of Air Materiel Command records on flying discs and Project Sign. Sign lasted barely a year, but it made Wright-Patterson the home of official Air Force UFO investigation for the next two decades, and the estimate Ruppelt described is still debated because no copy has been found.

Part 10 of a series reassessing the documentary record behind the 1933 Magenta narrative. TL;DR Before Project Sign, Hynek was Supervisor of Technical Reports at Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), 1942–1946, working inside the secret proximity-fuze program. A newspaper account says he led a briefing and reported that captured dud fuzes had been recovered. That does not establish that he commanded their recovery. The fuze program collaborated with Los Alamos. No evidence presente...

I have been recently conducting research into the origins of the modern UFO subject. A large part of that has been reading through these various lengthy historical declassified reports. Among them is a very interesting one, Project Twinkle. As I read the documents I write down quotes that I find interesting or significant. For my citations I use APA format and directly link to every source document cited. Some of the reports are hundreds of pages long. Project Twinkle is relatively manageable...

"The aerospace symbol on the upper left represents the interest of ATIC in aerospace equipment, manned and unmanned, vehicles, etc." Was the 1948 sighting and photograph of a boot heal-shaped UFO the inspiration for the Air Technical Intelligence Center emblem created in 1951? The exact same emblem continued in use after a name change to the Foreign Technology Division. The theme of our emblem symbolizes our mission, "Aerospace Technical Intelligence, Worldwide." The polar projection of the E...

A confidential 1948 Project Sign report details a remarkable series of July 1947 sightings over Muroc Air Field, where military personnel reported silvery discs, tight circular manoeuvres, a 50-foot oval object and a metallic craft descending almost to ground level.
