Taken, billed as Steven Spielberg Presents Taken, is a ten-part television miniseries produced by DreamWorks Television and broadcast on the Sci Fi Channel in December 2002. Created and written by Leslie Bohem with Steven Spielberg as an executive producer, it follows three families across several generations, beginning with World War II pilots and the 1947 Roswell era and ending in the present day of the story.
The Keys family experiences repeated abductions; the Crawfords build careers around a secret government investigation; and the Clarkes become central to an alien-human breeding project. By moving through parents, children, and grandchildren, the series treats abduction and contact as inherited trauma as much as spectacle. Dakota Fanning plays Allie Keys, a child whose abilities and ancestry draw together the alien and government plots.
Taken assembles many established UFO motifs into one continuous mythology: missing time, implants, screen memories, recovered debris, clandestine laboratories, Roswell, and hybrids. It does not present those elements as documentary reconstruction. Their dramatic power comes from blending stories that developed in different decades into a family epic about obsession, secrecy, and the cost of treating people as experimental subjects. Contemporary promotion emphasized Spielberg’s role, while Bohem’s long-form script supplied the series’ structure and emotional continuity.
The production won the 2003 Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries and remains an unusually ambitious example of UFO television before the post-2017 UAP era. Its influence is clearest in how it translated specialist lore into mainstream character drama. Taken belongs to the cultural history of alien belief rather than the evidentiary history of any one case: a fictional synthesis that made the themes of government secrecy and cover-up legible across fifty years of American life.
