Eglin Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force installation in Okaloosa County in the western Florida Panhandle, near Valparaiso. It covers about 463,000 acres of land and controls a large block of overwater test airspace in the Gulf of Mexico. Its host unit, the 96th Test Wing, tests air-delivered weapons, guidance systems, and command-and-control equipment. Tenants include the 33rd Fighter Wing, which trains F-35 pilots, and the Air Force Research Laboratory's Munitions Directorate. At Site C-6, a Space Force squadron operates the AN/FPS-85 phased-array radar, which tracks objects in Earth orbit.

The base opened in 1935 as the Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base and was later renamed for Lt. Col. Frederick I. Eglin, who died in a 1937 air crash. It grew into a center for developing and testing air-launched munitions, with ranges and tracking radars that keep its sky under close watch. That instrumentation gives Eglin aircrew reports unusual weight, while the base's own test aircraft, drones, and munitions are always candidate explanations.

At the 2023 House Oversight UAP hearing, Matt Gaetz said his office had received a protected disclosure from Eglin about an encounter over the Gulf. He said that he, Tim Burchett, and Anna Paulina Luna were initially denied access to images, radar, and the full flight crew. Gaetz said he was eventually shown an image of an orb "that I am not able to attach to any human capability," and that the pilot reported a diamond formation of objects and failures of his radar and infrared system. Air Force records released in 2024 under the Freedom of Information Act describe a January 26, 2023, test mission in which a pilot detected four objects and lost radar function near the lead one; a related video was withheld as classified.

In May 2026 the Department of War released a 30-second infrared clip titled as an Eglin aircrew report from February 13, 2023. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office said it likely came from a military sensor and drew no conclusion about what it showed. Gaetz said in April 2026 that an Eglin service member, accompanied by two defense contractors, had once briefed him on an alleged alien "hybrid" program that his staff judged nonsense. Online claims attributed to a former Site C-6 radar technician also circulated in 2026 without supporting records. Eglin's significance is that one of the country's most heavily instrumented test ranges produced a specific aircrew report that reached Congress and later surfaced, in part, in official records.
