The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office is the United States defense organization responsible for coordinating the government’s investigation of unidentified anomalous phenomena. Established in 2022 and placed under the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security, AARO succeeded the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group and absorbed the work associated with the earlier UAP Task Force. Congress subsequently placed its duties in statute and expanded its historical-review and reporting responsibilities.
AARO receives reports from military and federal channels, develops analytic standards, works with intelligence and scientific partners, and issues public case resolutions and annual reporting with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Its mandate covers anomalous detections in air, sea, space, and transmedium environments when they may implicate national security or flight safety. The office also created a secure mechanism for current and former government personnel to report knowledge of alleged UAP-related programs or activities.
Under founding director Sean Kirkpatrick, AARO built its initial analytic system and delivered public briefings to Congress. Its 2024 historical report said it found no empirical evidence that the U.S. government or private industry had possessed extraterrestrial technology, while acknowledging persistent reporting and data limitations. Witnesses, advocates, and some lawmakers have challenged AARO’s access, methods, and conclusions. Those disputes concern both institutional trust and the difference between failing to substantiate a claim and proving that no concealed activity ever existed.
AARO is now the government’s central operational repository for UAP reporting, but it does not control every sensor, archive, special-access program, or congressional investigation relevant to the subject. Its credibility therefore depends on transparent methods, documented access, reproducible case work, and clear statements about uncertainty. The office’s lasting importance will be measured less by the number of unexplained cases than by whether it creates a reliable, reviewable system for distinguishing hazards, ordinary objects, sensor effects, foreign technology, and genuinely unresolved observations.
