The Pentagon stands beside the Potomac River in Arlington, Virginia, directly across from Washington, D.C. Built during the rapid wartime expansion of 1941–1943, its five concentric rings brought offices of the War Department into one enormous headquarters. It remains the command and administrative center of the U.S. defense establishment, although the building and the broader institution are not interchangeable: thousands of defense activities occur elsewhere, while the physical Pentagon is a specific workplace, landmark, and National Historic Landmark.
Its connection to unidentified anomalous phenomena comes through decisions made and announced there. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office sits within the defense bureaucracy and receives military reports, coordinates analysis, and issues public assessments. Defense officials have also used Pentagon briefings to show imagery, discuss reporting mechanisms, and explain the department's conclusions. Those activities make the building a recurring setting in the modern history of UAP, rather than evidence that every relevant program is physically housed within its walls.
The Pentagon is equally important as a symbol. Reporters and lawmakers often say “the Pentagon” when they mean senior defense leadership, the services, or the Defense Department. That shorthand has shaped public arguments about secrecy, declassification, flight safety, and alleged retrieval programs. AARO's 2024 historical review said it found no verifiable evidence that a U.S. government investigation had confirmed extraterrestrial technology, while members of Congress and some former officials continue to press the department for additional records and testimony.
Because the White House, Congress, and the defense establishment divide authority over national-security information, the Pentagon is one node in a larger process. Its lasting relevance is concrete: it is where military observations become policy questions, where official findings are presented, and where disputes over access to classified UAP material are repeatedly brought into public view.
Two Government Accountability Office (GAO) officials are reportedly visiting military facilities across the country to interview service members about UAP sightings, how their bases handled those reports, whether witnesses were treated respectfully, and whether the Pentagon’s UAP office (AARO) properly documented their accounts.
