Puerto Rico is a self-governing Caribbean archipelago organized as an unincorporated territory of the United States under the designation of commonwealth. It lies between the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands, about 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, with San Juan as its capital and 3,285,874 residents at the 2020 census. In the 1960s the Navy's Atlantic Fleet Weapons Range off the island hosted active missile testing.
Much of the island's UFO lore centers on the southwest. Local folklore holds that a secret UFO base lies inside the Sierra Bermeja, a range of volcanic rock running from Cabo Rojo to Lajas whose birds feed at the nearby Laguna Cartagena. Puerto Rican investigator Jorge Martín publicized residents' reports from the area, including his account that on December 28, 1988, a giant illuminated triangle appeared to capture two military jets over the Sierra Bermeja and Laguna Cartagena; no military record of missing aircraft has surfaced. In 2005 the Associated Press found an "Extraterrestrial Route" sign on a rural Lajas road and a mayor who said he had seen red lights zigzagging above the hills.
The best-known modern case came from Aguadilla. On April 26, 2013, an infrared camera aboard a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft filmed what appeared to be an object crossing Rafael Hernández Airport, splitting in two and entering the sea. The Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies argued that it exceeded 100 mph and moved between air and water. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office released the video in 2024 and, in a March 2025 case resolution, reconstructed two objects drifting at about 8 mph with the wind, assessed "with moderate confidence" that they were sky lanterns, and said they "did not enter the water" but faded from the sensor through thermal crossover.
The 2026 federal releases reached further back. PURSUE UFO Files Release 05, published on August 7, 2026, included CIA papers on a November 19, 1964 encounter in which a Navy pilot described a delta-shaped object "about the size of a jet fighter" that he estimated at Mach 3, while a radar aboard the destroyer USS Gyatt tracked a contact at more than 3,800 knots. The CIA's scientific intelligence office judged it "conceivably associated with foreign intelligence gathering activities" near the missile range, and a 1965 memorandum assessed it as probably a high-performance delta-wing fighter. Those papers put a Cold War radar case beside the island's folklore and its most argued-over infrared video.
I was looking at the Surfline cam at Jobos Beach tonight and there are a bunch of crazy flashes of lights consistent with a thunderstorm offshore showing up on the cam, however the satellite and radar shows there is absolutely zero storm activity in the area.
