San Diego is the seat of San Diego County and California's second-largest city, on the Pacific coast beside the Mexican border. It had 1,386,932 residents at the 2020 census, ranking eighth among U.S. cities, and forms the core of the San Diego-Tijuana region, whose San Ysidro crossing is the busiest land border crossing outside Asia. Naval Base San Diego is the principal homeport of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, with more than 50 ships, while Naval Air Station North Island and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar host naval and Marine aviation.
The Navy's presence began with a coaling station on Point Loma in 1901 and grew into a center of Pacific naval operations, with ships and aircraft training in the waters offshore. North San Diego County has its own place in UFO history. From 1944, contactee George Adamski ran a campground and café at the foot of Palomar Mountain, where he promoted his 1952 claim to have met a Venusian named Orthon; visitors often assumed, wrongly, that he worked at the nearby Palomar Observatory. That observatory's 1949-1958 sky-survey plates later became the basis for disputed studies of pre-Sputnik transients.
The city's best-known modern UAP reports come from Navy crews offshore. In November 2004 the carrier USS Nimitz, then homeported at North Island, was training off Southern California with the cruiser USS Princeton when radar operators tracked unidentified contacts; Cmdr. David Fravor and other aviators said they saw a white oblong object, and the infrared clip released by the Defense Department in 2020 became known as the Tic Tac. In July 2019 the San Diego-based littoral combat ship USS Omaha tracked multiple unidentified radar contacts while training off the coast, and footage that leaked in 2021 brought the USS Omaha encounters to wide attention; the UAP Task Force did not determine what the objects were, and skeptic Mick West argued that one clip most likely shows a plane.
The naval thread continued in 2026, when Senior Chief Alexandro Wiggins revisited his account of four Tic Tac-shaped objects near the USS Jackson off Southern California in February 2023, saying the Navy had supported his congressional testimony and alleging pressure from the Pentagon's UAP office to repeat it in a secure facility. San Diego's significance is that its concentration of naval ships, aircraft, and instrumented offshore ranges placed trained crews and military sensors in position to log several of the best-documented naval UAP reports on record.

In July of 2019 the U.S Navy Caught this Object. Off the Coast of San Diego California. This Footage was not shown to the public for almost 2 years. But on May 14 2021 an investigative film maker named Jeremy Corbell leaked it online. And to this day in my opinion this is one of the most compelling ufo videos. And one of my favorite ufo videos.
The Nimitz video is one example. It was suspected of being a filmmaking hoax when it appeared online in 2007. According to this writeup of the original discussion, the person who posted it was even banned for hoaxing, years before the Pentagon confirmed it was Navy footage. What other cases are there? By authentic I mean actual footage, not necessarily aliens. Would love links to the original hoax claims and whatever later cleared it up.
