Raytheon is an American defense and aerospace manufacturer, best known for radar, missiles and military electronics. It was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 7, 1922, as the American Appliance Company by Vannevar Bush, Laurence K. Marshall and Charles G. Smith, and soon turned from refrigeration to electronics. During the Second World War it became the leading producer of magnetrons, the tubes at the heart of microwave radar, and by 1945 had built about 80 percent of them. Its engineer Percy Spencer's discovery that a magnetron could heat food led to the Radarange microwave oven, and the Patriot missile brought the company international attention in the 1991 Gulf War.
The company grew through acquisitions, most notably the 1997 purchase of the aerospace and defense business of Hughes Aircraft. In April 2020 it merged with United Technologies Corporation to form Raytheon Technologies, which renamed itself RTX Corporation in July 2023. Raytheon continues as one of RTX's business units.
Raytheon's documented place in the UAP record comes through its sensors. It developed and manufactures the AN/ASQ-228 Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared pod, or ATFLIR, carried by the Navy's F/A-18E/F Super Hornets. The three Navy videos the Defense Department formally released in April 2020, the 2004 "FLIR" clip from the USS Nimitz encounter and the 2015 "Gimbal" and "GoFast" recordings, were all filmed by ATFLIR pods, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Skeptical analysts have attributed the apparent rotation in the Gimbal video to the gimbal roll of the pod's sensor as it held its lock. Asked by the newspaper in 2021, a Raytheon spokesperson declined to comment and referred questions to the Pentagon.
The company's name also recurs in claims about secret programs. In a March 2026 American Alchemy clip, Steven Greer said a Raytheon operative had shown one of his contacts a classified, man-made triangular craft that could project holographic copies of itself, which the show's summary described as technology that could be used to stage a fake alien invasion. Eric Hecker, who has presented himself as a former Raytheon contractor, claimed on the Shawn Ryan Show in 2023 that the IceCube neutrino detector at the South Pole is a directed-energy weapon. IceCube scientists told AFP in 2024 that the detector emits nothing, and its spokesperson said Raytheon had been a contractor at the facility but he knew nothing of Hecker or any role he played. AFP received no response from Raytheon.
Raytheon also appears alongside Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and other contractors in lists of agencies and contractors that disclosure advocates say investigators should examine, including a "where to look" list posted by the journalist Christopher Sharp in May 2026. Its established connection to the subject is narrower: Raytheon built the targeting pods that recorded the Navy's best-known UAP footage.
