The Wall Street Journal is an American daily newspaper published in New York by Dow Jones & Company, a division of News Corp. Founded in 1889 by Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser, it built its reputation on business and financial news and now also covers politics, national security and world affairs. News Corp acquired Dow Jones in 2007. The paper has won 39 Pulitzer Prizes, is the largest newspaper in the United States by print circulation and reported more than four million digital subscribers in 2025. Its editorial page is typically center-right, while its news reporting is more centrist.
The Journal became a major voice in UAP coverage in June 2025, when national-security reporters Joel Schectman and Aruna Viswanatha published "The Pentagon Disinformation That Fueled America's UFO Mythology." The article reported that the U.S. military had fabricated evidence of alien technology and allowed rumors to spread to protect real secret-weapons programs, drawing on an investigation by the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office under Sean Kirkpatrick. According to the paper, personnel in some classified Air Force units were for decades briefed into a fictitious alien-technology program called "Yankee Blue" until a memo from the defense secretary's office halted the practice in spring 2023, and in the 1980s an Air Force colonel gave fake flying-saucer photographs to a bar owner near Area 51. A Pentagon spokeswoman said the office's 2024 historical report had left those findings out because the investigation was unfinished. A second installment that month, "Was It Scrap Metal or an Alien Spacecraft?", examined how the Army asked an elite defense laboratory to determine whether material was scrap metal or debris from an alien spacecraft.
The series drew sustained objections from disclosure advocates. On June 26, 2025, former Pentagon intelligence official Christopher Mellon sent the paper a formal correction request challenging its treatment of Eric Davis's statements, its account of the 1967 Malmstrom incident and its omission of statements by the Pentagon UAP office's then-director. Researcher John Greenwald of The Black Vault reported in September 2025 that the Office of the Secretary of Defense had found no records of the spring 2023 memo; a December 2025 appeal decision ordered a new search without confirming whether the memo exists.
The dispute continued into 2026. Schectman returned to the subject in February with "What Trump's UFO Deep Dive Might Reveal to Americans," published shortly after President Trump said he would direct agencies to release UAP records. In September 2026 the Disclosure Foundation published Mellon's letter, called on the Journal to correct the errors it identified and asked the National Press Club to rescind a journalism award it said the articles' authors had received. By late September 2026 the paper's website listed Schectman as a former national security reporter.
The Journal's series is the most prominent mainstream account arguing that parts of modern UFO lore grew out of U.S. military deception and secrecy. Its reliance on the Pentagon's own investigators placed the paper at the center of the 2025 and 2026 argument over the government's historical UAP record, against advocates who say officials have understated what the government knows.
