James T. "Jim" Ryder (1945–2018) was an American aerospace engineer and executive who spent 38 years at Lockheed and Lockheed Martin. From May 2005 until he retired in February 2011, he was a vice president of Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and head of its Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto, California. Since 2024, anonymously sourced reports have named him as the Lockheed executive who proposed handing alleged recovered non-human material to an outside organization, and a former intelligence official has written that Ryder described a Roswell crash to him. All of these claims surfaced after his passing.
Ryder earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in theoretical and applied mechanics and engineering mechanics at the University of Illinois. At Lockheed he moved from scientist and principal investigator to program manager, director and vice president, and he published more than 30 papers in the open literature on structural durability, optical materials and sensor instrumentation. The Sentinel Network credits the center under his leadership with projects including the near-infrared camera for the James Webb Space Telescope.
After retiring, Ryder chaired the board of the Institute for Venture Science, co-founded by Gerald Pollack, and founded the International Science Foundation to back SAFIRE, a laboratory plasma experiment built to test ideas about how the Sun works. He spoke at conferences of the Electric Universe movement, which promotes a plasma-based cosmology rejected by mainstream astrophysics. He passed away in 2018, and the foundation closed after his passing.
His name entered UFO reporting in November 2024, when Christopher Sharp of Liberation Times, citing anonymous sources, reported that Ryder, then a Lockheed Martin Space Systems vice president, had proposed transferring alleged recovered materials to an outside organization. The account was tied to the outlet's earlier, also anonymously sourced report that former CIA science director Glenn Gaffney blocked such a transfer. In September 2026, KLAS-TV's 8 News Now reported, citing individuals with knowledge of the events, that Robert Bigelow had met Ryder in Nevada and California to arrange a transfer of exotic material to Bigelow's company. UFO commentator Joe Murgia has identified Ryder as the unnamed aerospace vice president whose accounts the physicist Eric Davis has relayed in interviews.
The most detailed account appeared in October 2026. In his memoir Out of the Shadows, former UAP Task Force director Jay Stratton describes a meeting with Ryder at Lockheed and writes that Ryder told him a craft crashed near Roswell in 1947, broke in two and was recovered with non-human bodies for the Air Force's Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson. No document confirming these accounts has been made public. Ryder left no public statement on the subject, so his place in the UFO record rests entirely on what others say he told them.
