Leonard “Lyn” Buchanan is a retired U.S. Army intelligence specialist best known for his service in the government unit later grouped under the name Stargate. Trained in military intelligence and information systems, he joined the remote-viewing program in 1984 and remained through 1991. Declassified rosters identify him as viewer number 018, confirming his participation even though many operational details remain debated or redacted.
Buchanan worked as both an operational viewer and a database manager, helping organize session records and performance information. After leaving the Army, he founded Problems>Solutions>Innovations and taught Controlled Remote Viewing, a structured method derived from protocols developed around SRI and military programs. His book The Seventh Sense presents remote viewing as a trainable human skill rather than a supernatural gift.
He has described successful intelligence tasks and later uses involving missing persons, while also recounting far more extraordinary personal experiences. These include alleged contact with non-human beings, an abduction, and being taught to operate an unfamiliar craft. Such accounts are Buchanan’s testimony and are not established by the declassified program record. Government evaluations of remote viewing found disputed results and concluded that it had not produced reliable operational intelligence.
Buchanan remains important because he carried a classified-era practice into public teaching and linked it to UAP and contact narratives. His documented service establishes that U.S. agencies experimented with psychic intelligence methods; it does not validate every later claim about aliens or performance. His biography therefore captures both a real institutional history and the much broader worldview that some participants developed around consciousness and psi.
