Probed Analysis

Mike Turner is an American Republican politician who has represented the Dayton area of Ohio in the U.S. House since 2003 and chaired the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence from January 2023 to January 2025. In the UAP debate he is known less for anything he has said about the subject than for the role disclosure advocates attribute to him: they hold him and other House Republicans responsible for stripping the strongest provisions from the Senate's 2023 UAP Disclosure Act.

Born in Dayton in 1960, Turner earned degrees from Ohio Northern University, Case Western Reserve University's law school and the University of Dayton, and served as the city's mayor from 1994 to 2002. Elected to Congress in 2002, he represented Ohio's 3rd district and, after redistricting in 2013, the 10th. On the Armed Services Committee he held senior posts on the strategic forces and tactical air and land forces subcommittees and championed the growth of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the installation near Dayton long associated with Air Force UFO investigations. He was president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly from 2014 to 2016. He became ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee in 2022 and chairman in 2023, until Speaker Mike Johnson removed him from the post in January 2025.

Turner's chairmanship coincided with the claims of former intelligence officer David Grusch. Responding in June 2023, Turner said "there's no evidence of this" and that a cover-up "would be quite a conspiracy for this to be maintained, especially at this level." That July, Senators Chuck Schumer and Mike Rounds proposed the Schumer-Rounds UAP Amendment, with an independent review board and government control over recovered materials. Those provisions were removed in the December 2023 defense bill negotiations; NewsNation, citing unnamed sources, reported that they were taken out after influence from the Intelligence Committee Turner chaired. Grusch publicly criticized Turner; NewsNation quoted him in December 2023 as saying Turner "probably has no business being the chairman," and its report carried no response from Turner.

Turner has rarely discussed the subject publicly since. Ask a Pol UAP, which covers lawmakers' views on UAP, has said he never gave it an on-the-record UFO interview. In September 2026, Ross Coulthart said on NewsNation that Turner's name "shall forever live in infamy" for blocking legislation that would have handed disclosure decisions to independent experts. On September 16, 2026, asked by Ask a Pol whether he had seen any of the Pentagon's declassified UFO files, Turner replied, "You know we're not doing this," and walked away.

Turner's place in the UAP record rests on institutional power rather than public advocacy. He chaired the Intelligence Committee during the most consequential legislative fight over UAP records, and his reluctance to discuss the subject has made him the House member disclosure advocates most often blame for the loss of the review-board model.
