Probed Analysis

Nick Pope is a British author and former civil servant whose work investigating unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP/UFOs) has positioned him as one of the most visible experts in the field. He spent 21 years at the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), including from 1991 to 1994 serving in the Air Staff’s “UFO Desk” (Sec(AS)2a), assessing UFO report data for threats to national security, aviation safety, and defence implications. Since departing the MoD in 2006, Pope has written multiple books, appeared in documentaries and public forums, and acted as a commentator and consultant in media and entertainment covering aliens and the unexplained. It is precisely his intersection of government service, public commentary, and published investigation that gives him signal weight as disclosure conversations re-emerge at high political levels.

His public profile grew in part through non-fiction titles such as Open Skies, Closed Minds (which draws on his MoD UFO-desk experiences and case-files), The Uninvited, and Encounter in Rendlesham Forest, as well as through science-fiction novels that draw yet more loosely from insider knowledge. His media consulting spans television shows, documentaries, and appearances on debates about what has been learned or kept secret regarding the UFO/UAP phenomenon. His reputation derives from balancing documented empirical case-analysis (some unexplained after conventional explanations have been tested) with caution about exaggeration.

Pope has been closely involved in discussions around current governmental efforts to declassify or release files on UFOs/UAPs. He has expressed that such disclosures could uncover decades-long cover-ups, possibly involving recovered materials or technology. He does not assert that all government files confirm extraterrestrial origins, but emphasizes that some performance characteristics in certain sightings—radar-confirmed speeds, maneuvers beyond known aircraft capabilities—raise intelligence and defence questions.

In early 2026, Pope disclosed that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer that has metastasized to his liver, describing the condition as terminal and stating that he “can’t beat it.” He issued this diagnosis from his home in Tucson, Arizona. His announcement expresses gratitude—not regret—for his life’s work, and a hope that he has “helped move the needle forward” in the UAP/UFO field.

I had the privilege of interviewing Nick Pope in the summer of 2009. I asked a lot of questions about his background and experience at the MoD (Ministry of Defense) here in the UK. We discussed his knowledge of the UFO and Alien phenomenon. I was pleasantly surprised by how extensive his knowledge was. Nick Pope’s first television appearance came soon after he left the Ministry of Defence. Watching it now, you can hear something important taking shape: the careful, official-sounding language around UFOs and UAP that still defines the conversation today. https://t.co/HLDKfprtTB

Nick Pope mentioned the UFO Hate Group and modern ufology dynamics in one of his final articles before passing The article is very nice and reflects on where ufology was in the past compared to now and the modern disclosure movement. I recommend reading it. The section on the UFO Hate Group “There’s nothing new about infighting in the UFO community. What is new, however, is that folks with a background in military intelligence know a few dirty tricks that their civilian counterparts don’t. Pl...

The Economist published an obituary for Nick Pope. https://t.co/u5M4Uy6uTb

RT @SteveBassett: I am most pleased to see that Nick Pope received the honor of an obituary in the Times of London. #ufo #uap https://t.co/…

This interview is from 2014 and I wanted to share since his recent passing. In the interview Nick says, “there is a time when the people can push against a door, and for years and years that door doesn’t move. But gradually, it opens a crack. And once you then get your foot in and shove, sometimes those doors are completely open.”
