Steven Greenstreet is an American documentary filmmaker and journalist who has worked as a video producer at the New York Post since 2014. Since 2019 he has produced and hosted The Basement Office, the paper's YouTube series on UFO sightings and claims, and he describes himself as a UFO researcher. His reporting regularly tests disclosure claims against ordinary explanations, which has made him a polarizing figure in UFO media.
Greenstreet was born on March 14, 1979, and grew up in a Mormon family in Pylesville, Maryland. After serving a Mormon mission he studied briefly at Utah Valley State College and Brigham Young University, then left to make films. His first documentary, This Divided State (2005), examined the political climate at Utah Valley State College and in nearby Orem. He went on to direct Killer at Large (2008), about the American obesity epidemic, and to co-direct 8: The Mormon Proposition (2010) with Reed Cowan, a film about the church's role in California's Proposition 8 that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Before joining the Post he worked as a video journalist for the Center for Public Integrity and the Huffington Post Investigative Fund and as a video producer for the State Department, and he directed the MTV series Kesha: My Crazy Beautiful Life. At the Post he co-produced The Banker Suicides, which won Best Documentary at the 2016 Streamy Awards, and produced The Curse of Don's Plum (2019). Former British defence official Nick Pope often appeared beside him on The Basement Office until Pope's death in April 2026, and the show's interviews have included Skinwalker Ranch owner Brandon Fugal.
Greenstreet's 2026 work followed the government's new UAP releases closely. In March he flagged that the White House had registered the domains alien.gov and aliens.gov. In September a Post segment presented his finding that six "orbs" in a newly released clip, reportedly moving at 480 mph, appeared to have flapping wings. In August he shared Wall Street Journal reporter Joel Schectman's National Press Club award speech for a 2025 story that Greenstreet described as alleging the Pentagon faked UFO evidence and created alien myths.
That approach draws steady criticism from others in UFO media. In August 2026 researcher John Greenewald attacked his reliance on anonymous sources in a Post report saying that Jay Stratton had been "ousted from his Pentagon job," and some online critics group him with skeptics such as Mick West and Michael Shermer. The Post itself bills him as its resident UFO expert, and his debunking segments have become a regular counterpoint to the claims of disclosure advocates.
