Directed-energy weapons transmit energy toward a target instead of launching a solid projectile. The main military categories are high-energy lasers, which can heat or damage a precise point, and high-power microwave systems, which can disrupt electronics over a wider area. Millimeter-wave systems can also produce an intense heating sensation for crowd control. These are real engineering programs with power, cooling, beam-control, atmospheric, and range constraints.

Military interest is driven by speed and cost per engagement. Lasers can track and damage drones, sensors, rockets, or small boats; microwave systems may affect several electronic targets without expending a missile for each one. The Government Accountability Office and Congressional Research Service describe extensive U.S. research and demonstrations, while the Office of Naval Research lists high-power microwaves, ultrashort-pulse lasers, atmospheric characterization, and counter-electromagnetic effects work among active portfolios.

Directed energy enters anomalous-phenomena discussion through reports of burns, electronic interference, or sudden neurological symptoms. It is frequently invoked in debate over Havana syndrome. U.S. intelligence assessments have not attributed the overall set of reported health incidents to a foreign directed-energy campaign, although some agencies have kept open, at low confidence, the possibility that a foreign actor developed or used such a device in a limited number of cases. A technology’s existence does not identify it as the cause of a particular injury.

UAP narratives sometimes extend the term to invisible beams, propulsion, or alleged attacks by unknown craft. That usage can obscure the difference between measured weapons effects and an inference from symptoms or damaged equipment. A directed-energy attribution should connect a plausible source, wavelength or mechanism, delivered power, line of sight, and target effects. This is a genuine national-security technology category, but its known capabilities do not automatically explain every report of radiation, interference, or bodily harm.
