Mantis beings, also called mantids or insectoids, are tall, insect-like figures that some people say they have met during alien abduction or contact experiences, in dreams and visions, or under psychedelic drugs. Witnesses typically describe something taller than a person that looks like a giant praying mantis, and accounts often place these beings in charge of the smaller grey figures of abduction lore. No physical evidence of them exists; the category is defined entirely by testimony.
Skeptic Robert Sheaffer noted in 2005 that insectoid aliens had come to play a significant role in many abduction stories, which had not been the case in the 1970s. At a 2000 UFO conference, historian and abduction researcher David Jacobs said the insectoid creatures were "clearly in charge," according to Sheaffer's report, and Jacobs's 2015 book Walking Among Us described "Insectalin" leaders over six feet tall that look like a praying mantis. A parallel stream comes from psychedelic research. Psychiatrist Rick Strassman, who gave DMT to volunteers in the 1990s, likened some of their accounts to alien abductions, and a 2021 University of Greenwich study of 36 post-DMT interviews, led by Pascal Michael, recorded insectoid entities in four cases and "Grey- or Mantis-like" beings in two, calling abduction possibly the experience most comparable to the DMT reports.
Interpretations divide sharply. Many experiencers treat the beings as real non-human intelligences, some as physical visitors and others as interdimensional beings or astral entities. Researchers seeking natural explanations point to the brain and to culture. In a 2026 review in World Futures, Michael set out neuroscientific and psychological accounts of abduction experiences, including sleep paralysis, dissociation, false memory and serotonin-system effects shared with psychedelics, while allowing that some reports may elude even that integrated explanation. Sheaffer has also criticized Jacobs's reliance on accounts elicited under hypnosis.
Mantis beings drew wide attention in 2026. Journalist Ross Coulthart said in a February appearance on Chris Ramsay's Area52 podcast that "Mantis beings are communicating with experiencers and urging them to come forward," and in a July Q&A said he had been told mantids sit at the top of a hierarchy of non-human beings. Reddit forums such as r/MantisEncounters collected first-person accounts of mantis figures that comfort or heal witnesses. The same figure now appears in hypnosis-era abduction research, psychedelic studies and online experiencer communities, which makes it a recurring test case both for believers and for researchers seeking psychological explanations.
