UFOs: Past, Present and Future is a 97-minute American documentary released on July 31, 1974, and a companion paperback of the same name by Robert Emenegger, published by Ballantine Books the same year. Produced by Allan Sandler's Sandler Institutional Films, directed by Ray Rivas and written by Emenegger and Carol Johnsen, with a score by Emenegger, the film is narrated by Rod Serling, Burgess Meredith and José Ferrer and includes astronomer J. Allen Hynek among its interviewees. It surveys UFO sightings and official investigations, and it was nominated for Best Documentary at the Golden Globes in 1976.
Its lasting notoriety comes from footage it never showed. According to Emenegger and Sandler, military officials told them in the early 1970s that they could use film of a craft landing at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, an event most accounts date to 1964, and then withdrew the offer. The film instead includes a dramatized version, with three objects approaching the base and one landing on extended pads. For years a few seconds of it were rumored to be authentic, but analysis showed the shot was part of the re-enactment. The documentary was later reissued as UFOs: It Has Begun, and the 1979 version, released after Close Encounters of the Third Kind, added commentary by Jacques Vallée.
No film or official record of the alleged Holloman landing has been made public, and the story rests on the producers' accounts of what officials told them. It nonetheless spread: the landing at the climax of Close Encounters of the Third Kind has been described as a thinly veiled reference to it, and the story was later promoted by Richard Doty, the former Air Force counterintelligence agent who has said he fed false material to UFO researchers in the 1980s.
The documentary returned to circulation in 2026 as Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day approached. In March, after a widely shared post claimed that researcher Grant Cameron had revealed Spielberg was shown real Holloman landing footage in 1975, Joe Murgia countered that Cameron had said Spielberg was given a copy of this documentary, not the alleged footage. In July, physicist Eric Davis cited a taxonomy of craft and beings from a Robert Emenegger book on a podcast, and Reddit users circulated lists they attributed to this book. Half a century on, the film is remembered less for what it documented than as the source of the Holloman landing story.

The 1964 Holloman UFO LANDING... and the Footage No One Has Seen
[Retweeted] Jay Stratton reveals in his new book that there was "alien" contact with representatives of our government, and that there is film footage of the event. The encounter famously occurred at Holloman Air Force Base in 1964. Three UFOs approached the base - and ONE landed. It's reported that an NHI (alien) being came out, and made contact with elements of the U.S. GOV (Air Force and CIA representatives). Government insiders confirmed this event to Jay. This is an event @G_Knapp and I...

Taxonomies of NHI and UFO/UAP craft in Robert Emenegger’s UFOs: Past, Present, and Future
On the most recent Matt Ford podcast, THE GOOD TROUBLE SHOW guest Dr Eric W. Davis reiterated the four species of known NHI visiting or currently living amongst us on our planet, but he also cited a Robert Emenegger book that included a taxonomy of both UAP/UFO craft, but an extended list of species encountered and possibly living/visiting here. Is this the UFO's: Past, Present, and Future book? If so, does anyone have said taxonomy they can share? Thanx in advance
I went digging on the Scott Sylte UAP photos case, and the paper trail is much thinner than I expected. The images most people know from UFOs: It Has Begun trace back to the 1974 documentary UFOs: Past, Present, and Future, which was later reissued under the It Has Begun title. The most substantive historical lead I found is an indexed snippet from the Flying Saucer Review special issue UFOs 1968, Seattle. In that account, Scott Sylte is identified as a 14-year-old from Renton, Washington. On...

A blatant lie. As @SicCoP1 said yesterday: No wonder so many people are misinformed. No, Grant said Spielberg was given a copy of the documentary, "UFOs: Past, Present and Future," which Emenegger produced and wrote, NOT the alleged, actual landing footage. JFC.
