An unidentified submerged object, or USO, is a reported object or effect in the maritime domain that cannot be identified from the available information. “Transmedium” refers to an object or device reported to move between domains, such as air and water, with apparently connected behavior. Current federal definitions place submerged and transmedium reports within the broader category of UAP.
The category does not by itself establish extraordinary motion. A distant splash, radar track, infrared contrast, sonar return, or object disappearing at the horizon can be misread without synchronized sensors and reliable geometry. Maritime environments add refraction, clutter, waves, biological activity, and limited visibility. Demonstrating a true air-to-water transition requires a continuous track or coordinated observations that exclude separate objects and sensor artifacts.
Public government reporting contains far fewer maritime cases than airborne ones. AARO’s FY2023 report said the space and maritime domains needed fuller integration, while nearly all reports in that period were airborne. Later reports likewise document only a small maritime sample. This scarcity makes stories associated with Navy ship and submarine encounters important but difficult to generalize from.
The strongest USO case would combine calibrated radar, electro-optical data, sonar or hydrophone records, platform positions, environmental conditions, and witness accounts. Such evidence can test whether the same object crossed the surface and whether its speed was actually anomalous. It would also need timestamps precise enough to distinguish one continuous event from unrelated contacts in different domains. Until that record is available, USO and transmedium remain report categories—useful for organizing sensor evidence, but not conclusions about origin or capability.
