1971 Lake Cote UFO Photo

The 1971 Lake Cote UFO Photo is a frame from a Costa Rican government mapping flight showing a disc-shaped image over Lago de Cote; analysts still dispute whether it records an object or a flaw in the film.

Probed Analysis

On the morning of September 4, 1971, a survey aircraft of Costa Rica's Instituto Geográfico Nacional photographed the country's northern highlands from 10,000 feet, mapping land for the Arenal hydroelectric project. Aboard the Aero Commander were pilot Omar Arias, aerial photographer Sergio Loaiza, geographer Juan Bravo and topographer Francisco Reyes, according to Costa Rican press accounts. A large-format mapping camera mounted in the floor, reported as a Zeiss RMK 15/23 with a 6-inch lens, exposed black-and-white frames automatically at fixed intervals. Frame 300, taken at 8:25 a.m. over Lago de Cote, shows a sharply outlined, disc-shaped image over the lake. Frames 299 and 301 show the same area without it. None of the crew reported seeing anything, and the image was noticed only after the film was developed and reviewed.

The frame stayed in the institute's files until staff noticed it later. In 1979 the Costa Rican researcher Ricardo Vílchez sent it to the U.S. group Ground Saucer Watch, and it was published in Costa Rican media that year, CRHoy reported in 2016. Jacques Vallée saw the photograph at a meeting in Costa Rica in 1985 and obtained a second-generation negative from Vílchez, along with copies of the adjacent frames. With Richard Haines, a former NASA Ames research scientist, he published "Photo Analysis of an Aerial Disc Over Costa Rica" in the Journal of Scientific Exploration in 1989. They measured the oval image at 4.2 millimeters on the negative and calculated that, if it were as far from the camera as the ground, about 10,000 feet, its maximum dimension would be about 210 meters. They found no shadow of the disc and noted that its dark regions did not match the sun's position. They concluded that "an unidentified, opaque, aerial object" had been photographed, found "no indication that the image is the product of a double exposure or a deliberate fabrication," and called the case open. A follow-up paper appeared in 1990.

The same journal printed a dissenting referee's review. Marilyn Bruner, a senior staff scientist at the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory, examined the negative under magnification and judged the image "more likely to be an artifact such as a pressure mark than a photographic image of a physical object," possibly left by a particle trapped between layers of film on the supply spool. She pointed to an edge sharper than any feature on the shoreline and to the absence of the light spread a bright object should produce, while acknowledging that her view rested largely on conjecture because the original film was not available. Haines and Vallée replied that such a particle would probably have marked the adjacent frames, which showed no matching distortion. Participants in the skeptical forum Metabunk revisited the case in 2026 and mostly favored a flaw in the film, while noting that only physical examination of the original could settle it.

Renewed attention began with new scans. After his uncle passed away in 2021, Costa Rican attorney Esteban Carranza obtained a contact copy of the original negative, which is held by Costa Rica's National Archives. A Kansas photo laboratory scanned it on a drum scanner, and UAP Media UK released the high-resolution file in May 2022, IFLScience reported. A further drum scan from the team behind a new documentary circulated in spring 2026. The Cote Photo, by Detroit filmmakers Adam Pillon and Megan Woomer, premiered on Apple TV on September 4, 2026, the photograph's 55th anniversary. According to La Nación, it follows Carranza and includes extended testimony from Loaiza, now 83. Carranza and Pillon discussed the case with Richard Dolan in September. On October 27 Carranza joined the VETTED podcast for a live stream titled "The Cote UFO Photo Confirmed?" as the photograph again circulated widely on X.

The photograph's strength is its provenance: a government survey camera, a dated and numbered frame, a named crew and adjacent frames that show the same lake without the disc. Its weakness is that it rests on a single frame, and the central question, whether the image records an object in the air or a mark on the film, has not been settled by an examination of the original negative.

WXYZ-TV Detroit | Channel 7 - New documentary about the famous 1971 Lake Cote UFO photo taken in Costa Rica by National Geographic out next Friday

There are thousands of UFO photos out there, but most are obvious hoaxes, misidentifications, or have been thoroughly debunked. I'm curious about the exceptions. For example, photos like the Calvine UFO photograph, the Lake Cote (Costa Rica) UFO photograph, or the McMinnville UFO photographs are often mentioned in these discussions. What other photos belong in this category, and which one do you think is the strongest UFO image ever captured that still hasn't been convincingly debunked? submi...

Time: September 1971 Location: Lake Cote, Costa Rica This photo was reportedly taken in 1971 during an aerial mapping survey over Lake Cote in Costa Rica by the National Geographic Institute of Costa Rica. What I find interesting is that it doesn’t feel like the usual blurry witness photo. It came from an official aerial survey context, which makes it harder to dismiss casually. I’m also curious how people interpret older cases like this now that some discussions are shifting from “extraterre...
