Pennsylvania, officially the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is a Mid-Atlantic state bordered by New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Ohio, with a shoreline on Lake Erie. Harrisburg is the capital, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are the largest cities, and the 2020 census counted more than 13 million residents, fifth among the states. Nuclear power is part of its landscape: the March 28, 1979 accident at Three Mile Island was the most significant in the state's history, and Talen Energy's two-reactor Susquehanna Steam Electric Station has run in Luzerne County since 1983.
On December 9, 1965, a bright fireball was seen across several states and Canada, and residents of Kecksburg, about 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, reported vibrations, a thump and something crashing into the woods. State police and Air Force personnel searched and said they found nothing, officials attributed the fireball to a meteor, and witnesses later described an acorn-shaped object; the Kecksburg incident became known as "Pennsylvania's Roswell." Journalist Leslie Kean sued NASA for its records, and after a 2007 court order to search, NASA said two boxes of papers from the period were missing.
The Chestnut Ridge region of southwestern Pennsylvania became a second focus. Greensburg investigator Stan Gordon has gathered its reports for decades; his best-known case is from October 25, 1973, near Uniontown, where about 15 people reported a large red object descending and a farmer's son and two boys later described a glowing dome in a field and two tall, hairy figures, at which the farmer's son fired tracer rounds. Gordon has said most reports have natural or man-made explanations but some "cannot be easily dismissed." Seth Breedlove's 2017 documentary Invasion on Chestnut Ridge covered the area's UFO and Bigfoot accounts, which the podcast Somewhere in the Skies revisited in July 2026.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and published by Liberation Times in April 2026 list eight drone incidents in just over a month in 2022 at the Susquehanna plant. On October 3 that year, at least four drones entered its airspace for two hours and eight minutes, one of them larger, triangular and apparently carrying a large spotlight. The records, drawn from reports the NRC sent to the Pentagon's UAP office, identify none of them. From a fireball that sent searchers into the woods at Kecksburg to drones over a reactor site, Pennsylvania's UFO history has moved from local legend into federal records.

Noticed something strange on my way home, I love inbeyeeen a few major highways and hospitals so a med flight isn’t out of the ordinary. The object was hovering for roughly 30 seconds above a cemetery which prompted me to pull over and try for a better look. Checked the flight radar and there was nothing nearby. About two years ago I was walking along the back road behind my house in Pennsylvania. I was thinking a lot about death and the afterlife when I entered a meditative state and got the urge to look up. When I looked up I saw a white tic tac flying east very slowly.
