Russia spans northern Eurasia and inherited the military, scientific, and archival institutions of the Soviet Union. Its place in UAP history is therefore larger than any one Russian sighting: Cold War air-defense systems watched immense borders, rocket and missile programs produced unfamiliar observations, and Soviet secrecy made outside verification difficult. The resulting record mixes official interest, credible uncertainty, folklore, and material released only after the USSR dissolved.
In written testimony submitted to the U.S. House in 2023, journalist George Knapp described obtaining Soviet military UFO files in the 1990s and said they reflected a decade-long Ministry of Defense study. His account is an important source for the subject, but it is still an account by a journalist who collected and translated records after the fact, not a complete public Russian archive. The late Soviet period also produced highly publicized civilian stories. In 1989, the state news agency TASS reported extraordinary claims from Voronezh involving a landed object and beings; international coverage noted both the lack of firm evidence and the newly permissive media atmosphere under glasnost. Other reports concerned lights, military encounters, or alleged artifacts. Their variety resists a single national explanation, and sensational press treatment sometimes traveled farther than the underlying investigation.
Russia remains relevant to UAP through military aviation, space activity, strategic competition, and the incomplete availability of Soviet-era records. The strongest historical point is not that Russian authorities confirmed extraterrestrial craft, but that they, like their American counterparts, gathered reports that could affect air defense and national security. What survives publicly reveals sustained attention while leaving major gaps in methods, classification, and final assessments.

This UFO was reported near the city of Shalya, Russia, on June 3, 2002, seen between 8:45pm to 8:59pm, for 1 or 2 minutes, from a witness in a forest. The UFO was described as a black sphere moving like a bouncing ball and was silent. The witness says they were not alone, but unsure of the exact number of witnesses of the object.
