Elizabeth Vargas Reports is an hour-long weeknight newscast on NewsNation, anchored from New York by veteran ABC News journalist Elizabeth Vargas and airing at 7 p.m. Eastern. The network describes it as a program in which Vargas "delivers the biggest stories, without bias or opinion," and it opens NewsNation's primetime ahead of the commentary and talk shows that follow. Unidentified anomalous phenomena have been a recurring strand of its coverage.
NewsNation announced the program on January 10, 2023, and it premiered on April 3, 2023, at 6 p.m. Eastern from a new studio in New York City, built around one-on-one interviews with newsmakers and field reporting by the network's correspondents. In February 2025 it moved to 7 p.m. as Vargas signed a new multi-year contract; the network said at the time that viewership had risen 20 percent since the debut and noted that Vargas had co-moderated the final Republican presidential debate before the 2024 Iowa caucuses.
Its 2026 coverage centered on national and international news: the war with Iran, President Trump's state dinner for Xi Jinping, the reopened Cornell University sexual assault case and a whistleblower's allegation that New Jersey officials ignored toxic test results in Keyport. In May 2026 NewsNation launched "American Made," a recurring series on the program about American companies such as Ford, Whirlpool and Campbell's.
UAP segments clustered around the year's big developments. During the April reporting on missing and deceased scientists, Rep. Eric Burlison suggested foreign adversaries might be responsible, Rep. Tim Burchett said his own inquiry had been thwarted, and former defense official Marik von Rennenkampff said he doubted any "throughline" linked the cases. Filmmaker Jeremy Corbell presented material he said documented a secret 1991 government meeting on "atmospheric anomalies." After the first Pentagon file release in May, retired Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet said the images showed the military was "not in full control or understanding" of its airspace, and director Dan Farah said of a later batch that "what we're seeing now barely scratches the surface." In June former Pentagon official Christopher Mellon discussed incursions over military bases, and in August von Rennenkampff described "black triangles" as a common shape in the latest tranche.
Elizabeth Vargas Reports gives the subject the framing of a straight evening newscast, pairing members of Congress and former officials with each new government release. That approach made it one of the NewsNation programs that kept congressional and Pentagon UAP developments on national television through 2026.
