Wernher von Braun (1912–1977) was a German-born rocket engineer who led development of the V-2 missile for Nazi Germany and later the Saturn V moon rocket for NASA. His place in UFO history rests on claims made about him after his passing, chiefly by his former Fairchild Industries colleague Carol Rosin.
Von Braun was born on March 23, 1912, in Wirsitz, then in the Prussian province of Posen, and earned a physics doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1934 while working on army rockets. He became technical director of the army rocket center at Peenemünde, applied to join the Nazi Party in 1937 and joined the SS in 1940, rising to the rank of Sturmbannführer, or major, by 1943. The V-2, first fired at England in September 1944, was built in part by concentration camp prisoners at the underground Mittelwerk plant, and about 12,000 people died producing it, more than the roughly 9,000 killed by its attacks. Von Braun admitted visiting the Mittelwerk and seeing terrible conditions there, and his biographer, the historian Michael Neufeld, wrote that his legacy will "forever be tarnished by his service to a murderous regime."
He surrendered to American forces in May 1945 and was brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip, first to Fort Bliss, Texas, and in 1950 to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. His Army team launched Explorer 1, the first American satellite, in January 1958, and in 1960 he became the first director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, where he was chief architect of the Saturn V. He moved to NASA headquarters in 1970 to lead planning, left the agency in 1972 to become vice president for engineering and development at Fairchild, received the National Medal of Science in 1975 and passed away in Alexandria, Virginia, on June 16, 1977.
Carol Rosin, who worked at Fairchild in the mid-1970s and describes herself as his spokesperson in his final years, said in testimony for Steven Greer's Disclosure Project in 2000 and 2001 that von Braun repeatedly warned her that a succession of invented enemies, from the Soviets to terrorists and asteroids, would be used to justify weapons in space, ending with the warning that "the last card is the alien card." Her account rests on her memory of private conversations. The physicist Robert Sarbacher wrote in a 1983 letter that he was sure von Braun would have been asked to join discussions of recovered saucers, though he said he had not attended those meetings himself.
Rosin's name returned in May 2026, when the War Department's first UFO file release included a NASA-credited file carrying Rosin's April 2001 cover letter. Posts that year recast her account as a deathbed warning, and others shared a quotation attributed to von Braun in 1959 about "powers which are far stronger than hitherto assumed," which UFO books repeat but whose original source has not been traced. An X account claimed he took Uri Geller to see alien bodies in 1973, and a family story told in a 2024 film on Paperclip held that he was rushed to Roswell after the 1947 incident. Von Braun's documented legacy is the rocketry that carried astronauts to the Moon and the slave labor that built the V-2.
