Michigan's two peninsulas project into four of the Great Lakes, placing much of the state beneath cross-border air routes and near large expanses of sparsely observed water. That geography has shaped its best-known aerial-anomaly episodes. Reports from Michigan range from meteors and aircraft to cases that prompted police, military, or federal attention; they do not form one continuous statewide phenomenon.
In March 1966, residents and law-enforcement officers around Dexter and Hillsdale reported lights and objects near the ground. Air Force consultant J. Allen Hynek investigated for Project Blue Book and publicly suggested “swamp gas” as an explanation for some observations. The phrase became notorious, drew criticism from witnesses and lawmakers, and helped damage confidence in the Air Force's handling of UFO reports even though the individual accounts differed in detail.
Michigan returned to the center of a national air-defense episode on February 12, 2023. NORAD tracked an object across the region, and an F-16 shot it down over Lake Huron at about 20,000 feet after officials judged it a potential aviation hazard. The 2023 Lake Huron UAP Shootdown was one of three unidentified-object downings that weekend. Recovery efforts ended without finding debris, leaving the object's precise identity unresolved; officials said there was no indication it posed a direct threat to people on the ground.
These episodes matter for different reasons. Dexter–Hillsdale became a lesson in public trust and the hazards of applying one explanation to varied testimony. Lake Huron documented how modern radar sensitivity, civil-airspace risk, and incomplete recovery can leave an object officially unidentified without implying an exotic origin. Together they give Michigan a specific, bounded place in U.S. UAP history.
