RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge are two former airfields near Rendlesham in east Suffolk, England, close to the town of Woodbridge and about 16 kilometres east-northeast of Ipswich. Woodbridge was built inside Rendlesham Forest, and the U.S. Air Force, which ran both for four decades, called them the Twin Bases. Bentwaters is now Bentwaters Parks, a business site and film location whose former hardened command post houses the Bentwaters Cold War Museum. Woodbridge passed to the British Army in 2006 as MOD Woodbridge, home of Rock Barracks.

Both began as wartime RAF stations. Woodbridge opened in 1943 as an emergency landing ground for damaged bombers returning from Germany, with a runway 9,000 feet long and 750 feet wide, about five times the usual width. Bentwaters, begun in 1942 as RAF Butley and renamed in January 1943, opened in April 1944 for Mustang and Spitfire squadrons. The U.S. Air Force took over Bentwaters in March 1951 and Woodbridge in 1952, and from 1958 the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing operated the pair, flying F-4 Phantoms from 1965 and A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from 1979. The wing was inactivated on July 1, 1993, and both airfields returned to British control that year.

The bases appear in two of Britain's best-known UFO cases. On the night of August 13–14, 1956, Bentwaters ground-controlled approach radar tracked fast-moving targets, the start of the Lakenheath-Bentwaters incident. The Condon Report judged that "the probability that at least one genuine UFO was involved appears to be fairly high," while the skeptic Philip Klass blamed false radar returns and meteors. In late December 1980 a security patrol near Woodbridge's east gate saw lights apparently descending into the forest, the beginning of the Rendlesham Forest incident. The deputy base commander, Lt. Col. Charles Halt, sent a memo to the Ministry of Defence, which received it in January 1981 and said publicly from 1983 that it was "of no defence significance." Skeptics attribute the lights to a fireball, the Orfordness lighthouse and bright stars.

Few places concentrate so much of Britain's military UFO record. Both cases involved American personnel, radar or command paperwork, and long afterlives in books, documentaries and file releases; the ministry released its Rendlesham file to the researcher David Clarke in 2001. The bases remained a reference point in 2026, when former Air Force test pilot Dan Isbell compared his own account of a silent triangular object near RAF Upper Heyford in December 1980 with Rendlesham-era reports in an interview on Ryan Graves's Safe Aerospace podcast.

I hear all these names thrown out there and I often don’t know where they are. Especially the UK ones since I’m an American. I spent more time on the UK one because of this.
