White Sands Missile Range is a U.S. Army test range in southern New Mexico, run under Army Test and Evaluation Command. It covers about 3,200 square miles of the Tularosa Basin and surrounding mountains, with more than 3,400 square miles of restricted airspace, and the Army describes it as the Defense Department's largest fully instrumented open-air test range. It surrounds the gypsum dunes of White Sands and adjoins Holloman Air Force Base to the east, and its tenants include NASA, the Navy, and the Air Force.
The range grew from a 1941 bombing range into White Sands Proving Ground in July 1945, days before the first atomic bomb was detonated at Trinity Site near its northern end. The Army fired 67 captured V-2 rockets there between 1946 and 1951, merged in Holloman's range in 1952, and renamed the installation White Sands Missile Range in 1958. Since then it has hosted more than 42,000 rocket and missile tests, as well as the DC-X reusable rocket flights of the 1990s and a Boeing Starliner landing in 2022. Its trackers, cameras, and range crews produced several of the best-instrumented UFO reports of 1949 and 1950.
In 2026 the range became a center of directed-energy testing and of UAP allegations. Military and FAA teams tested counter-drone lasers there in March, and in June Secretary Pete Hegseth watched a live demonstration of five laser and high-power microwave systems. Rep. Eric Burlison said he had been briefed on a "very successful" operation to draw in UAP without naming a site, and journalist Ross Coulthart reported, citing unnamed sources, that it took place at White Sands and that President Trump had authorized the military to bring such objects down. A Disclosure Foundation official separately described a successful luring operation at a southwestern facility in December 2025.
No government body has confirmed any UAP downing. Asked about Coulthart's report, the Department of War referred questions to the White House, which did not respond, and released records describing orbs at a redacted western test site do not name White Sands. A February 2026 closure of El Paso airspace, which officials attributed to a counter-drone laser fired at what appeared to be a party balloon, has not been officially tied to the range. White Sands Missile Range's significance is as the country's premier overland weapons-test range, now also the proving ground for weapons designed to stop small aerial targets, which places it at the meeting point of documented testing and unconfirmed claims about UAP luring operations.
