The Galileo Project is a research initiative led by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb and launched in 2021. It seeks to apply astronomical instruments, calibrated sensors, and open scientific analysis to unusual objects near Earth and possible interstellar artifacts. The project is hosted through Harvard affiliations and supported by private donations rather than operating as a government investigation.
Its work includes ground-based observatories designed to record the sky across optical, infrared, acoustic, magnetic, radio, and radar channels. Teams develop hardware, machine-learning pipelines, and classification methods intended to distinguish birds, aircraft, balloons, satellites, weather, and sensor artifacts from genuinely unusual observations. Separate expeditions have examined material Loeb associates with an interstellar meteor, a conclusion disputed by other scientists.
The project places scientific UAP research around prospective data rather than retrospective witness reports. That design addresses a central weakness in the field: most famous cases were not observed with instruments built for open analysis. Loeb’s public willingness to discuss extraterrestrial hypotheses attracts attention and funding, but the project’s scientific standing depends on whether its data and inferences withstand independent review rather than on the novelty of the hypothesis.
Galileo’s institutional contribution is the construction of a testable observing program outside classified systems. Even null or ordinary results can improve classification and establish realistic detection limits. The project will be most influential if it releases methods and datasets, separates instrument performance from interpretation, publishes negative findings, and enables researchers who do not share Loeb’s expectations to reproduce the analysis. That openness would let the observing network contribute to atmospheric and aerospace science even if it never records an object requiring a novel explanation. Calibrated negative results can narrow future claims as effectively as an unusual detection expands them.
