In UAP discussion, "gatekeepers" are the people said to control access to alleged legacy programs involving recovered craft, biological material or reverse-engineered technology: senior officials, program security managers and executives at defense contractors who supposedly decide who is told what. The word is an advocate's label, not an official category, and no government has acknowledged such a group. It builds on long-running claims that compartmentalization and contractor custody have kept these programs outside normal oversight.
The term gained wide circulation in 2026. Retired Major General Neil McCasland, a former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, was reported missing from his Albuquerque-area home on February 27, 2026, and speculation quickly tied his disappearance to UFO secrecy. In early April, Representative Tim Burchett said in a widely shared clip that his sources had identified McCasland as "The UFO Gatekeeper," adding, "This is a very small fraternity." The characterization rests on unnamed sources, and McCasland's disappearance remains an open missing-person case.
Robert Bigelow gave the word a more sympathetic meaning in August 2026 interviews with George Knapp on the Bigelow Podcast. He described gatekeepers in government and private corporations who, he said, have "custody of the goods," argued that they need legal protection, and said the government had been a full partner with the companies from the start. He later proposed case-by-case presidential preemptive pardons for corporations he says hold crash retrievals, bodies and reverse-engineering programs, framing secrecy as a technology race with China and Russia. Those claims about recovered craft remain unverified. Others use the term adversarially: Ross Coulthart asked in August 2026 whether the president would allow himself to be "hoodwinked by the Legacy gatekeepers."
The label matters because it turns the disclosure debate from whether hidden programs exist to who allegedly holds them and on what terms they might give them up. That framing runs through 2026 arguments over pardons and immunity, whistleblower protections, and presidential directives on nondisclosure agreements. Whether advocates cast gatekeepers as custodians to be protected or obstacles to be bypassed, the word has become shorthand for the unnamed people at the center of legacy-program allegations.
